For students of any level, I tend to always focus on mastering breathing and classical technique. I believe that it is imperative that students develop this way as it is fundamental to any true vocalist. My methods are quite particular to the individual and their natural strengths and weaknesses, but I approach every student with a tried and true structure that leads to fast and noticeable results. I also tend to use written material lending to the classical technique as a way to standardize practice times to structure individual progress outside of lesson time. Read More

If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I have a degree in Music with a specialization in piano. This path allowed me to play and practice similarly to performance majors as well as study theory, history, education, and composition as i desired.

What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
My favorite style to play in is cinematic themes. I love playing a motif, like Darth Vader's theme, while also exploring different accompaniments and arrangements, which is what cinematic music allows you to do.

What does a normal practice session look like for you?
I start my practice sessions by stretching my hands, fingers, forearms, and neck. This is crucial to release tension that can get in the way of playing musically and also can be dangerous. I then warm up with scales, arpeggios, Hanon exercises, and diminished 7th chord exercises. When it comes to playing repertoire, I will practice in sections, hands separately, with a metronome, or any other techniques that might help with the challenge presented. I never like to spend too long on one piece at a time and usually take short breaks in between repetitions.

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
I believe that it is never too early to introduce a child to music. When it comes to piano lessons, it is important for a child to know the alphabet, counting, and to have the fine motor skills to move their fingers individually. If a child is able to color, draw, or build even the most elementary puzzles, they are ready to start piano!

When will I start to see results?
Children tend to see musical and theoretical results quickly because learning music is like learning a new language, which is easier for children. Adults tend to see results that are more tangible because they can understand faster and are more comfortable with their bodies. One lesson is enough to grow in knowledge, and, after just a couple lessons, with practice, playing piano will start to feel natural and easy!

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
Although I have performed at the college and professional levels, as well as graduated sumo cum laude and composed for award winning ensembles, I am most proud of a medley of Disney songs I put together by ear. Being able to play any Disney song on command is one of my favorite things!

What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
I don't believe that there is a single technique that is hardest to master, since every student is different. However, having and accepting the knowledge that there is always more to learn is a great way to stay focused and positive when studying and practicing!

Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
My method for teaching is that every student is unique. If a student is training to become a college music student, we will dive into things that will prepare them in the best way for that. If a student wants to learn how to play their favorite pop song for their friends, we will learn the techniques required to meet that goal!

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Repetition is the most important part of practicing. Repetition trains our minds, eyes, ears, and fingers to perform music at a higher level. Practicing should be fun, so patience and a positive mindset are crucial to keep ourselves on track when things get difficult and discouraging.

Jazz Scales: The Pentatonic Scale

...be played over certain chords. Likewise with the dominant7(b9) pentatonic, the major(b6) pentatonic, etc.   But that’s not what I’m getting at. A single pentatonic scale has multiple applications. Let’s use the major pentatonic scale as an example. The most obvious use of the major pentatonic scale is to play it over the major chord based on the root or to play it in the major key based on the root. Similar to the blues scale, you can simply blanket the pentatonic scale over a simple progression. That’s its obvious chord/scale relationship; a surface reading of. The least colorful. That’s how a lot of... Read More

The chords are the open-position D, G, and A chords with two additional barre chords, the Bm and F#m.   We’ll be staying relatively true to the accompaniment on the recording and you shouldn’t have too much trouble with it. This is a fun tune that you can quickly add to your repertoire and if you’re experimenting with finger-style technique and/or singing while playing, then you’ve found the perfect tune to get started with.     Accompaniment Techniques The rhythmic feel consists mainly of an eighth-note rhythm. ...as parts of an opera. Technically, an ensemble can refer to a duet, trio, quartet, chorus, or any group of performers singing together. More often than not, the word “ensemble” refers to a time in the opera when multiple characters are portraying conflicting emotions at the same time.   Here are the different types of ensemble in opera, as well as some famous examples of each.   The first and most common sort of ensemble you’ll hear in an opera is also the biggest one–the chorus. The Importance of Creativity in Piano Lessons

...of it can be applied to nearly any piece to practice improvisation:   Determine what scale(s) and/or hand position(s) the piece is in, and whether all of it is easy enough for the student to improvise over.   At the end of the head, the student improvises in that scale while the teacher creates an accompaniment over the chord changes, encouraging the student by imitating and developing their ideas.   For intermediate students: With an understanding of basic harmony as a basis, explore playing at least some pieces from charts or lead sheets, modifying chords with tensions, inversions, and voicings. Basic accompaniment patterns such as ... Read More
