I've recently moved to the Bryan/College Station area to work at Texas AM as part of their Center for Teaching Excellence. I also play piano at Covenant Presbyterian Church! I received my PhD in Fine Arts from Texas Tech in 2018, having studied there with Dr. William Westney, performing recitals, accompanying instrumentalists and vocalists, teaching group classes and private lessons, as well as serving as pianist at multiple churches. For beginners, I typically start with Mayon Cole's EZ Keys for younger children (age 4.5 to 5), and I use manehune (age 6) or level one (age 7-10) or above for elementary school age children. Once the student has progressed and gain confidence in sight reading and rhythm/counting, I will then supplement the curriculum with solo repertoires from other piano curriculum such as Fabor/Fabor or Alfred series (Little Mozart). It all started when I took my first drum lesson in the 4th grade. From then on, I wanted to play whenever I could. I played in all my school bands from middle school to high school. Graduated Southern University, home of the world famous "Human Jukebox" which I was a member of for 3 years, as well as playing for my church since I was 13. Along the way I have had the honor of meeting and learning from respected musicians such as Lawrence Jackson (former director of SU Bands), Herman Jackson (Brother of Randy Jackson), Jerry Lee Lane (Marching percussion pioneer) and countless others. Always tried to teach them something they can use now(like a cool beat or fill), this way they get enthusiastic and stay with it. My wife talked me into teaching again. We were at the recording studio one day but had no bass player, but my friends son was there, so I taught him the basics in 10 minutes and we recorded right after. Read More
