Instruments: Piano Drums Mallet Percussion Orchestral Percussion

For my younger students who may not have musical goals I keep the instruction very easy going and well rounded. For my advanced and more focused students I let them set their own goals and then help them in every way I can. I want my students to learn how to play like themselves and not like me so if a certain aspect of the lessons does not work for them I make adjustments and we keep moving forward. Read More

Instruments: Piano Voice Music

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson, while also gently pushing them to take their abilities to the next level when I see that they are ready to. In addition, acknowledging accomplishments help fuel students' desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. Read More

Instruments: Piano

I have played the piano since childhood and specialize in the classical repertoire, as I believe it offers the most comprehensive method of attaining instrumental mastery. However, I will not hesitate to use any material that interests a student, in any genre, provided sheet music is available. I can play jazz and improvise fluently and have also played in blues bands, but prefer to devote myself to classical music. I play the guitar at an advanced level and for the last seven years have written about a great variety of Western music for Fanfare Magazine, contributing full length interviews, often with famous musicians, and CD and DVD reviews. Instruments: Piano Synthesizer Music Keyboard

My teaching style prioritizes mindset and artistry above all, but my approach is highly student-specific. I pride myself on allowing students to discover and pursue their musical interests while still maintaining a base level of knowledge and skill appropriate to the student's age and experience. In the case of young students who may not be familiar enough with musical material to select pieces, I typically assign listening homework to complete outside of the lesson. Read More

Instruments: Piano Voice Flute Piccolo

Teaching is the best decision I have ever made in my entire career. When students first start I always ask them what their goals are and what they would like to work on. My goal for them is to watch them grow into the best musicians they can be because I see so much potential in them. For band students, during marching band camp, I asked my students to play what they could and gave them feedback afterward including suggestions on how to correct bad habits early on. Read More

Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
As I’ve been spending the past few years performing professionally and away from teaching, I haven’t had this pleasure yet. I have felt incredibly privileged to continue to be asked by my colleagues to help them with their own technique and watching them apply my adjustments in their performances has been an honor. Now that I am back full time in nyc, I look forward to rebuilding my studio and stretching my students to their full capability. I’m completely confident that my students can find ways to prepare themselves for those situations as they come.

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
While I always was known as the best singer in the school or playing the lead in the musical or receiving the scholarships, few things have made me feel as accomplished as singing in front of people in general. An audience is the missing piece we need as performers. I especially love singing for relatives. Especially my grandfather. I love being able to bring joyful tears to his eyes. He was the first call I made when I secured my first professional job. My friend is on the board for the Trevor Project and together we brought my one woman show together and raised over 10k dollars for the cause. At a meeting in LA, a prominent producer asked who I was and why I had raised much more money than Rob Thomas had at his event. That moment was pretty cool.

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
The joke is that I came into the world singing. I was singing before I could talk, writing operas from the crib. My father was a percussionist by hobby and a music minor in college. He recalls me sitting on my grandma’s lap at age 2 and singing along to her playing the piano. Have you ever been at a birthday party and realize that whomever started singing first, chose a really high key to sing Happy Birthday, but you don’t realize till the second to last line? My father recalls my ear being so good at 2, I had no problem keeping in tune when my grandma picked a rather high key to sing happy birthday. He said he knew then and there that I would be a singer. I took piano and violin and played in the youth symphony, attended violin music camps, choir camps; the whole enchilada. I always had an ear for music, but singing allowed me to access imagination as a child that I still get to use today when I have the honor of getting to play make believe for a living
