For piano- I teach out of several method books- Faber, Bastein, John Thompson and Alfred's. I also implement Dozen a Day for piano technique and Hanon and scales. I use Czerny for the intermediate student. For voice- I work to build a solid understanding of breath, posture, vowel sounds and shapes, singing legato, etc. I believe a classical technique in both instruments is the best foundation for growth into any style. For my jazz students, I always start them off singing simple standard tunes that many people are familiar with. I have access to every jazz real book, and have many different lead sheets to tunes that aren't even included in them. I also have access to many different musical theatre books for all different voice types. I'm working on getting more piano books in my library, but I am a friend to many professional pianist that are able to provide a variety of texts to me which helps me more than I know. Read More

In order to achieve this I provide as much encouragement as possible in well performed passages, and zero-in on trickier passages. I require that my students practice as regularly as possible and most of their assigned homework consists in suggesting strategies or exercises to master those trickier passages as soon as possible and move on to even trickier ones.
