I've worked with children in various settings including the YMCA, local Sports Teams, and youth programs at several churches. I've taught music for 6 years and have enjoyed it since. I use two pianos minimum for my lessons, along with recordings at multiple speeds in order to minimize the rhythmic mistakes so common in private lessons. Students are taught to make the connection between what they are playing and hearing, and what others are playing and hearing. Composition and Improvisation play an important roll in this connection, which is why I make it a part of every lesson. I perform on Broadway also. I was in 22 performances at Theater Under the Stars in Houston. I was then on television's Star Search and won. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn.
