I used to teach piano at a music store in the Village of Webster for about a year. The majority of my students were kids, from age 8 to roughly 16. I ended up teaching a 5 year old at one point. I do like to encourage regular practice but only if the student is genuinely interested in learning and enjoys playing the instrument. Piano is not for everyone but I try to make it as enjoyable as possible! Read More

Teaching should be fun for both the teacher and student! I truly believe that the teacher should learn as much from the teacher as the student learns. Each person interprets a song differently and I want to allow my students to be expressive and find their passion for and through music. For vocal performing, it can be a vulnerable experience. The voice is such an innate part of you--no one's vocal instrument is exactly like yours! Read More

Yes for teaching piano I use Nancy and Randall Faber's books. I have used all of them. For guitar and mandolin I generally do not use a "book". As the lessons progress I might introduce a book if that is what is called for. All orchestral instruments call for the structure of a book and I augment that with my own explanations. This is true for all ages of learners. Read More

It is not necessary, however, to learn chords or grooves specifically from a book for these instruments. Depending on the desired style, there may not be much use of notated music, guitar tabliture, etc. But as already stated, this does not excuse a good foundation in reading music and understanding music theory. For more advanced players (who would most likely be percussionists if working with me, though I am willing to work with any instrument at a more advanced level), we would work out of books I and the student(s) find fitting for their skill level. Nothing is more rewarding to me than seeing a student develop a genuine passion for music! I believe that every student learns best when they are progressing at their own pace. To support this, I set realistic, individualized goals at each lesson, helping students build a strong foundation while acknowledging each step forward. Celebrating these accomplishments fuels their desire to learn and makes them eager to dive deeper into their studies. Read More

I'm very patient and kind. Students are expected to practice but I don't I'm always positive and create an enjoyable and rewarding lesson experience. I understand that my students progress at various paces and have different interests. I always give them challenges at any level and find materials of their interest to enhance the learning experience. Read More

I use the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements method for my beginning students. As my students progress, I introduce solo repertoire suitable for a recital/performance situation. I start with music of the students' choice as soon as I see fit which encourages practice. A good part of my lesson time is spent is playing music with the students. Read More
