For piano students ages 5-9, I generally use the Faber and Faber Piano Adventures series. For piano ages 10-12 I use the Older Beginner series. My teen and adult students normally work out of and Adult All in One series. For more advanced piano students Ill work repertoire, theory and scales/technique as needed/desired by the student. I have worked with special needs kids and adults since I graduated, then after a brief period of break due to having my own children, I am back to teaching piano lessons. I have worked in schools and hospitals since my internship before graduating and now teaching in my home studio. I love to work with kids and I believe the younger they are, the better they should experience music early and more formal lessons can be provided as long as they are able to sit, understand how to read and keep rhythm. For beginning students, I normally start with Alfred's Drum Method. This book works on the fundamentals of reading snare drum music and basic technique. Once the students grasps the basics on reading and playing with a metronome then we tend to move to Tommy Igoe's Groove Essentials (while still working on the Alfred's Method). After the student has began to play with the audio tracks and have succesfully gone through a few lessons from Groove Essentials then we begin to work on some solo repertoire and personal favorites as well. During my middle through high school years as a performing arts student, I began teaching to the younger grades because I loved filling my time with music performance and education. I was honored to perform at various venues on Philadelphia's Avenue of the Arts, such as the Kimmel Center. I have performed with the Curtis Institute of Music, Temple University's orchestra, the All-City Philadelphia Orchestra, as well as multiple performances with the conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra. For example, for the advanced high school student I often mold my teachings around college audition requirements and all-state, regional band auditions. Otherwise, particularly for younger styudents, I am not very performance oriented. I think it is more important to learn to "play" at music rather than plan and prepare for multiple recitals. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with method books, and focus on teaching my students how to read notes and rhythms. With young students, I also prepare fun games and activities that will help them become acquainted with the keys on the piano. As the student progresses, I find and introduce new repertoire that is appropriate for their skill level. For teenagers and adults, I find out what the student is interested in learning and how I can best help them reach their goals! Read More
