As an active composer, musician and teacher I have been active in the Indianapolis music scene beginning in high school. Pursuing a Bachelor of Music Degree at the University of Indianapolis, I hope to eventually earn my Doctor of Music Degree and teach collegiate level. I have extensive experience both as a soloist and with ensembles. I have played for a number of jazz big bands and new music ensembles. Read More

I started teaching private piano lessons to all ages and abilities when I was in college. I have experience with beginner level students ages 5-adult and intermediate level students ages 6-14. I have experience teaching traditional classical piano (reading sheet music), as well as pop piano (reading lead sheets). I've had the privilege of studying under several different piano professors and teachers in the past 15 years. I draw on their teaching styles, as well as my own experience in teaching. Read More

-Easy going, enthusiastic, responsible, truly care about the growth of a student's music ideas, fingers techniques, and love each of my students with care and sincerity. -Using an as easy as possible language to explain the hardest technique knowledge points in playing the piano. How to seat, how to raise hands, how the wrists can help forming a beautiful musical phrase, how to relax, how to improve techniques, how to play fast and clear. -Customized teaching method for each student which will help the students to exert their best potential music ability with their unique hands condition and musical acceptance ability. Similar to what is written above I prefer an approach that is rooted in the fundamentals. It is my belief that learning these well can serve a student later on when the music starts to become more difficult. Most students I have that have learned in this way tend to not get overwhelmed and are able to transition to higher levels of playing more easily. One of my favorite quotes is "The advanced level is mastery of the basics" which I have found to be true. Read More

As a teacher, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing a student develop a passion for music. If my students do not leave every lesson feeling inspired, encouraged, and wanting to practice and play music, then I am not doing my job. Just as I tailor each lesson to match the individual student, expect the student to grow and develop as a musician at his/her own pace. Ultimately, music is universally accessible and I want to foster a love and appreciation for listening to music as well as performing music. Read More

For adults, I would continue using these books but at a higher level with supplemental material on the side, which may include solo repertoire appropriate for them and Hanon's Virtuoso Pianist exercises (a few, not all). For voice students, I try to find out what it is they are interested in singing; I am comfortable with all genres but it should be noted that I am classically trained and can work more easily and comfortably for those wanting to sing classical music, musical theater, and church related music. A student must enjoy what they are working on in order to progress. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Touch your instrument every day you eat. LOL! In all seriousness, it is better to practice a little bit for many days in between lessons, than just cram a practice session in the day before. ALWAYS practice the day of your lesson (right after) OR the next day to put into practice at home what you learned during the lesson.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
What I like is if your child can read, they are ready. I will take younger children, with parent involvement - and those lessons are more game based and introduction to the instrument rather than serious study.
When will I start to see results?
The more time you invest in your instrument and the more you practice the way the teacher asks you to practice, the sooner the results. I also tell students that I go as fast or slow as the student tells me, through the interactions at lesson. Some students go very quickly and learn quickly, others need more time.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
My mother is in music, and you can say I was in music before I was even born. She is definitely an inspiration and a current teacher of mine in both piano, pedagogy, and business. My flute teacher is Gary Schocker, the more prolific living flute composer, and is absolutely a fabulous flute player! I have learned so much from him - and when he looked at me and said, "Why you can really play!" I think it changed my life!
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I chose flute since before I was born. The first instruments I recognized was piano (my mother's instrument) and flute. We think she composed a flute solo in her final senior orchestral composition project, which I must have attached to.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I am most proud of being able to use my music no matter what was happening in life- from losing family members, to moving around the country since marriage, to raising 5 children. It has always been a part of my life, and I have always found places to play.
Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
One that comes to mind is a flute student of mine when I taught in Naperville, IL. The Catholic Church in town was very particular on who would play for important services, and one of the most important ones was the midnight mass on Christmas Eve/Day. She was chosen as a sophomore in high school to play in that orchestra, the only high schooler asked in the parish. I went into the crowded church and found a seat in a tiny corner. It was one of the most beautiful musical times I was able to enjoy!
