I believe I am a friendly guy at heart, so I tend to be friendly with the students. There are times where I have to tell them, for example, "You haven't been practicing.". But I try my best to do that in love while encouraging them when I see even the smallest improvement. I feel as though the key is to play as much as possible. That can be hard to do when you feel like you don't know how to play. Read More

My beginning students usually start with Hal Leonards Essential Elements, Accents on Achievements, Do It Play In Band, and much more. Once my student is able to grasp basic fundamentals and a healthy proper tone and technique, I will then be able to incorporate solo repertoire for future recitals and contests. For adults, I will find out what interests my students and coordinate my lessons accordingly to keep the lesson engaging and fun. Read More

I am a unique teacher who realizes that not every student is the same, or wants to learn the same type of music in the same way. I almost consider myself more of a COACH than a teacher. Yes, I do teach, and I am classically trained. However, I am more suited for the beginning/intermediate/late intermediate student (13 years of age or older) who wants to learn NEW ways of playing and performing a variety of music. Read More

I began teaching private lessons during my summers off from college, just a few students at a time.  Since beginning my teaching career, my focus has shifted slightly to group piano classes, while still teaching privately after school.  I have been a student of private instruction since the age of three, and my experiences in my private lessons have shaped the way I structure my own lessons for students.  I firmly believe that my students need to not only study solo repertoire, but also that they spend some time every week focusing on technical exercises to solidify their musical foundation. For beginners, it's important to build from a solid foundation, so I emphasize on creating a strong understanding of musical concepts. From there, the student is able to decide on the direction they would like to move towards, classical, pop, etc. I typically teach through the Alfred methods, but am also flexible & have experience from teaching through additional materials that work best for the student. For students with previous musical experience, we decide together if the student would like to continue with their current curriculum or move in a different direction. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Having a detailed practice plan, covering all areas of the lesson given, and then specifically outlining what is expected to reinforce this concept, is vital for success. I have instilled the 'honor system' when a student checks off their daily accomplishments. This teaches responsibility/dedication/honesty. Five days per week of practice time is a good guideline for most students. Setting a specific time to practice helps. A student should have food and water in their tummy, prior to practicing.

When will I start to see results?
Most students that can comprehend simple directions can play after one lesson a basic tune learned by my direction. For instance, a beginner can be shown how to hold their hands properly to execute a tune on Black keys only. A familiar tune, following a sequence of patterns is easily learned by rote. Also, a young beginner that knows the alphabet A-G can learn the sequence of the musical alphabet. Practicing these basic technics is fun and rewarding. I can easily figure out one's interest level quickly., creating a rewarding experience.

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
My father's work required many miles of travel on the Navajo reservation on a daily basis. He came across a driver on a long barren stretch of highway that had a flat tire and stopped to assist. Conversation led to discovering the driver was hauling a new piano back to his store in Flagstaff, AZ. The family that ordered the piano lived in Page, AZ and was disappointed in the finish. The driver asked my father if he'd like to see it. A couple of hours later, my mother and father purchased the instrument. Yes, he drove it to our home in Tuba City. My parents

What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
I am most proud of my successes as a much sought after piano instructor, for some students and their families, over two generations. What a pleasure it is to have student's approach me at community, school, and church events with excitement! I am honored to see many of my past students embrace music in various forms, many times by self-reports. These relationships were not cultured with the intent of expectations by me. I was simply a vessel to encourage a talent and appreciation of music. Lucky me.

Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
Seven of my students ranging from 8 - 14 were in a concert association competition. Their bright minds were filled with knowledge that they were a guest at the event to share their favorite piece with a special group of people. each of the seven placed first in every category. I taught a current popular performing artist fundamentals that now support their musical career. When dedicated, a teacher has the opportunity to encourage self esteem, self discipline, and the love of an instrument. I believe this is a cornerstone for positive progress. Eighty seven students later, I am confident stating , "Every student is capable of becoming an award winner in my book." It isn't always a physical, tangible award. Sometimes it is about self accomplishment, meeting a personal goal that has been set by the student.

A Quick Guide To Playing Indie Guitar

...in this article.     Drop The Distortion   This is by no means a hard and fast rule, but lots of indie guitarists have opted for clean tones over noisy and distorted ones. Indie bands are experimenting with sharp, clean tones played through delay effects pedals. This departure from distortion forces bands to rely more on melody lines than they used to, and the results are impressive. Check out Real Estate’s song “Darling” for an example of clean indie guitar work at its finest:     Pack Up Those Power chords   Indie guitarists have largely ditched the thick, chunky sound of power chords. ...Blank Space is a song by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift from her fifth studio album, 1989 (2014). It was written by Swift, Max Martin, and Shellback. The song was released to the radio by Republic Records on November 10, 2014 as the album’s second single, after Shake It Off and is the second track on the album. Musically, Blank Space is an electropop song with lyrics that satirize the media’s perception of Swift and her relationships. Today we’ll learn an easy arrangement of the Blank Space chords for guitar.   Blank Space reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 following Shake ... Read More

Mastering the Cello Repertoire: Twinkle Variations, Dvorak Concerto, and What Lies Between

...from enthusiastic beginners to promising young professionals: it is only a matter of time and a little bit of stubbornness. It is important that any course of musical study is guided by a pedagogically informed progression of repertoire. It is both effective and more rewarding to study pieces with objectives that can be fully mastered, an approach that will solidify new technical skills, encourage a sense of accomplishment, and pave the way for future success in more challenging aspects of the cello repertoire. For this reason, finding a knowledgeable teacher who is able to inspire and guide students along each ... Read More

Jazz Scales: The Diminished Scale

...functions in jazz. In jazz education, we often talk about “chord/scale relationships”. The meaning of this phrase is intuitive. It simply means figuring out how each scale relates to each chord and vice versa. The two diminished scales function in different ways. The “whole/half diminished scale” works over a fully diminished seventh chord. If you look at the scale, every other note is a part of the chord. The notes in-between act as leading tones to the chord tones. The “half/whole diminished scale” works over a dominant seventh with a flat nine and/or sharp nine chord. This is why some people call it the “dominant diminished ... Read More
