For piano I prefer the Faber series. I like to include scales, sight-reading, and repertoire of the students choosing and of my suggestion. For Voice I like to cover the anatomical fundamentals (posture, breath, phonation, and depending on age), in the first lesson, and each lesson includes a warm-up as well as at least one piece of repertoire of the students choosing. For guitar I teach note reading as well as tablature, but we mostly work from tablature, unless the student is studying classical. Read More

My approach to teaching is centered around whether the student is having fun. My goal is never to force anyone to become a professional in our lessons. If you want to get to that level I can certainly help, but I am more concerned about having fun playing trumpet and piano. We will do a lot of listening homework as well, since listening is just as important as playing. A lot of my students so far really appreciate that balance and the break between playing their instruments. Read More

My solo repertoire includes pieces ranging from Baroque era to modern music, which makes me a unique expert in piano performance in regards to styles, various techniques and musical interpretation. Also, I have taken numerous private master-classes from well known piano masters such as Boris Berman (Dean of piano department at Yale University), Alexander Korsantia (Professor at New England Conservatory, winner of Rubinstein international piano competition), Jura Margulis (Professor at Arkansas University), Ian Fountain (Professor at Royal Academy of Music in London), which makes me familiar with different music teaching "schools" of performance. I started piano lessons at the age of 7 (I am now 45) and have never started being involved in music in one way or another ever since. It is both my passion and my career. My passion for music means that I am always learning more about it and working to improve. My career in music has led me on travels around the world; I have played in Rome, Switzerland, Spain, Ecuador, Argentina, and all over the USA. Read More

Berklee College of Music graduate, Aaron M., has been teachings students of all ages for over 18 years. "I love watching young musicians grow into seasoned players and have had tremendous success with all my students. I believe that learning songs and playing music is a critical element in the learning process of becoming a good musician. This is why I bring a powered PA speaker, mp3 player, and (sometimes) a guitar to my lessons for the student to play along with and learn familiar songs. Read More

Instruments: Piano Violin Viola
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
Fell in love with violin at age 14! Was playing piano by ear from the age of 3. Hearing my mother play piano daily was a huge inspiration.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
My natural ability to teach and ability to solve problems for students. My students tell me I have laser vision. Solving technical and musical issues
is what gives me enthusiasm.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
It was my 1st violin teacher. She taught till she was 96. When I trace my violin ancestry through her, I become 4 people removed from the great composers Brahms, Schumann and Dvorak. My students become 5 removed from the greats!
When will I start to see results?
Results are within a week if practicing occurs at least 5 days a week. It does not have to be long. Even 5-10 mins a day for beginners can create fluency. More advanced students would need 15-20 mins. Even professionals can see results with 30 mins-1 hr. a day if practicing is efficient. Practicing 3-4 hrs. a day like one hears about in media articles is completely unnecessary and can lead to over kill/burnout.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
1st isolate the problem spots and work only on those. 2nd analyse the problem. Many times it is only 1 note or finger that is causing a passage to stumble. There are only 7 issues I've categorized that can go wrong. If all 7 are addressed Mastery is assured.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If the child responds to music positively that is a clear sign. Do they sing or dance to music?
Even for those who are not into music, playing a musical instrument gives them an enormous advantage in life due to the development of the brain, attention, and awareness that ensues from playing an instrument. Albert Einstein played both violin and piano. One does not have to become a professional musician to excel in music or playing an instrument. Some of the best musicians and brightest minds I've encountered have been in other professions, but they played piano, violin, viola at professional levels and in some rare cases beyond any professional musician. It is not unusual to find Surgeons, Doctors, Engineers, scientists, etc. excel at piano for e.g. One of the best pianists I've ever heard was an actuary (Insurance). This gentlemen exceeded the talents of any concert pianist I've ever heard (and I've heard most of the top ones). Also a throat surgeon more skilled than most professional violinists.
