Hi, I am a graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, and have been teaching drums, piano, and percussion for over 12 years. I focus on the fundamentals of teaching students how to read music and the rudiments, but try to balance this with just playing and having fun. I want all of my students to have fun, and stay interested in playing and growing as a musician. Read More
Instruments: Piano
I teach classical music exclusively. My strategy for utterly inexperienced students is to remove from the equation the difficulty of reading a music score, and just allow the hands to "learn" the keyboard by having the student repeating short musical sentences (either preexisting or improvised by me on the spot). Once familiarity with the keyboard has been achieved, or if the student already reads music, we move on to his or her first book, and I tend to favor Nancy and Randall Faber's Piano Adventures. Music pleases our ears, so, many people would think to train their ears only; however, no one will ever play music well if ear is the only tool. Listening, visualising and touching should get involved at the same time. This is what I learned in my lessons. It is proved to be a helpful and efficient way of learning music, and I wish my student will eventually understand it. In order to achieve it, ear training, sight reading and singing will be applied. If a student is just starting out, we go over the parts of the instrument, how to hold and make a sound with the instrument. We start with simple songs that only have a few notes. We learn easy song after song and learn the notes along the way. once the student has enough skill on the instrument I start to have the student pick songs they want to learn. Read More

All of my singers work through the exercises by Mathilde Marchesi as they are the backbone of bel canto and good healthy singing. I encourage my vocalists to explore different styles and techniques to find the best fit for their instruments. I also teach theory and sight singing using various different methods and tools. I am a big believer in encouraging my singers to do research on the pieces they are performing. Read More
Instruments: Piano Keyboard
My teaching experience dates back to my teenage years where I taught beginner students the basics of piano.Later in my college days I helped students with limited musical backgrounds learn the basics of music theory. I believe beginner piano students should start with the basics but also learn contemporary chord theory so they can soon begin to play with others. This is more important if they are older.I think this combination is helpful in motivating them to practice which creates the fastest progress. Instruments: Piano Violin Viola
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
Fell in love with violin at age 14! Was playing piano by ear from the age of 3. Hearing my mother play piano daily was a huge inspiration.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
My natural ability to teach and ability to solve problems for students. My students tell me I have laser vision. Solving technical and musical issues
is what gives me enthusiasm.
Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
It was my 1st violin teacher. She taught till she was 96. When I trace my violin ancestry through her, I become 4 people removed from the great composers Brahms, Schumann and Dvorak. My students become 5 removed from the greats!
When will I start to see results?
Results are within a week if practicing occurs at least 5 days a week. It does not have to be long. Even 5-10 mins a day for beginners can create fluency. More advanced students would need 15-20 mins. Even professionals can see results with 30 mins-1 hr. a day if practicing is efficient. Practicing 3-4 hrs. a day like one hears about in media articles is completely unnecessary and can lead to over kill/burnout.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
1st isolate the problem spots and work only on those. 2nd analyse the problem. Many times it is only 1 note or finger that is causing a passage to stumble. There are only 7 issues I've categorized that can go wrong. If all 7 are addressed Mastery is assured.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If the child responds to music positively that is a clear sign. Do they sing or dance to music?
Even for those who are not into music, playing a musical instrument gives them an enormous advantage in life due to the development of the brain, attention, and awareness that ensues from playing an instrument. Albert Einstein played both violin and piano. One does not have to become a professional musician to excel in music or playing an instrument. Some of the best musicians and brightest minds I've encountered have been in other professions, but they played piano, violin, viola at professional levels and in some rare cases beyond any professional musician. It is not unusual to find Surgeons, Doctors, Engineers, scientists, etc. excel at piano for e.g. One of the best pianists I've ever heard was an actuary (Insurance). This gentlemen exceeded the talents of any concert pianist I've ever heard (and I've heard most of the top ones). Also a throat surgeon more skilled than most professional violinists.
