For beginners who are children, I generally start with the John Thompson course which I still believe to be the best. Alternatively I use the Bastien method which I like because it teaches the students chords and music theory and contains catchy tunes, some of which the students already know. Later, I use the Music for Millions Series Books 1 and 2 which contains many excellent beginner and intermediate pieces that students enjoy playing and which can be challenging at times. Read More

In 2007, I graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science in Music Education. I was a member of the Penn State Marching Blue Band and have participated in several Alumni Blue Band performances since graduating. I went on to earn my Masters of Music in Music Education from Northwestern University in 2012. I enjoyed teaching music in the public school for ten years. I've loved piano playing and performance since I attended a piano recital in college. I love to practice, and have developed methods to make practice more efficient and fun. I encourage students to attend recitals and performances whenever possible, since this can provide motivation and familiarity with the piano literature.
