I am just starting to teach in person but throughout the pandemic I taught beginner theory such as how to count, the notes on the piano, and understanding rhythm. I also taught many of my parents friends kids whatever songs they were interested in on the piano so they found love for the instrument first. For beginning students, I first focus on helping them understand their range (i.e. bass, tenor, alto, soprano) and important fundamentals of singing (i.e. loose jaw, full use of our body as support for our voice, relaxed tongue, proper breath support with the diaphragm, expansion of the ribs, proper body posture, etc). If a student isn't having fun learning the instrument then I am doing something wrong! Learning should be fun and a joy not a chore. I try to encourage the students to practice without being told to do so. With that comes a joy of doing it on your own and for themselves not for anyone else.
