I stay flexible to the individual students' needs. I try to keep the student engaged and ask many questions to help them become their own best teacher. I will give assignments and create goals but also want the student to be self motivated. I will not be overly strict when it comes to practice. In college while I was living amongst 7 other peers, I was constantly asked about how my creative process worked and how I created music from scratch. As a student, I would dread the idea of a boring practice, therefore as a teacher, I do all I can to make lessons engaging and useful. I believe that music should be approached holistically and with an open mind rather than trying to force one method to work for everyone, so I strive to tailor my methods according to the needs of each of my students. My teaching style is very transparent; I want my students to recognize what we are working towards and how close they realistically are to that goal. This way, the student and I are working together to achieve a greater understanding of their instrument! I love feeling like I'm helping a student gain an understanding of a topic, rather than simply dictating a list of rules to know.
