I like to use guitar books if at all possible for beginners because its a great place to start. I strongly encourage young children to have good and constant practice habits as this not only helps to succeed in the pieces they are working on, but it makes music learning all the more enjoyable! For beginning students, I will usually go with a methods book, requiring them to learn 5 finger patterns, and then eventually major and minor scales(all three forms). Once the student has progressed from the beginner methods book, I will suggest classical repertoire for each student based on their preferences and personal skill level.
