My mother was a trumpet and piano teacher and I grew up with lessons going on in the house constantly. My father was an English teacher for 35 years! I have enjoyed thirty years of private lessons, teaching all ages a variety of styles of music! My sister is a violinist that plays in the Stanford Symphony! I try to provide a good balance between working on theory, technique, and repertoire, and working on aspects that might be more fun like a students favorite song. This allows the student to make progress while also keeping motivated, which is really important for long term goals. For children, the balance has to lean more towards the more entertaining aspect, because of the reduced attention span. I actively work towards getting the younger students to increase their tolerance towards difficult challenges so that they can make more overall progress. Read More

For beginners, I normally start with simple melodies and exercises. Scales and tunes can be added at a certain point. From early on, I also focus on ear training - the essential part of music learning - so a student gradually learns to hear what he/she plays. Sight reading music is also incorporated in the process from early stages. My teaching experience dates back to my undergraduate experience, where I vocal and music directed 6 student theater productions. This includes providing one-on-one vocal instruction for leads and ensemble members and teaching full vocal scores to ensembles of over 20. I was also the music director of my A Cappella group, so I have experience auditioning, training, and rehearsing a cappella singers. I am also a trained pianist and accompanist, so I provide tracks for students virtually and live accompaniment for in-person lessons and use these skills to provide piano lessons. Read More

I try to relax the student first with body relaxation and breathing methods. We then do warm up vocal exercises to build the voice and then work on songs. I play the accompaniments on piano for them and they can record all of the lesson. I also do vocal coaching and incorporate acting methods. Piano students need to learn how to play basic songs first but then we can start to incorporate songs or other music they like into their lessons. Read More
