I like working with students in a way where our love of music is the center of our attention, as such musicality is always the goal. For beginner students who’d like to sight-read, I like to start with the Alfred Modern Guitar Method 1 and supplement that with the Mel Bay Modern Guitar Method, Grade 1, or Frederick Noad’s Solo Guitar 1 if we’re learning classical guitar. For young learners, I teach using Nancy and Randal Faber's Piano Adventures. For adults, I use the all-in-one Faber adult book. However, as early as possible, I like to get outside of the book and get a student learning a song they love. When it comes to learning piano (especially in the beginning), fun is a critical ingredient for success. In my lessons, I work with students through a lesson book, on repertoire they are interested outside the lesson book, on technique, music theory, and anything a student is interested in or curious about. I am primarily a percussionist, with over 10 years of expierience playing and performing in jazz bands, marching bands, musical theatre, small ensembles, wind ensembles, and symphonies, and I was the principle percussionist for 2 years while I was in college. I also have 5 years of expierience on the trumpet, 15 years of guitar, as well as expierience with many other instruments.
