For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Burnam's A Dozeon A Day and Faber's Piano Adventures. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For students who take ABRSM exam, I will not only focus on playing of three repertoire, but also the skills of sight-playing and ear-training. It's important for students to learn to have fun while playing the same scale or rudiment over and over, and I think this is entirely possible! I also think it's important for students to see just exactly what their hard work is striving them toward. For beginning students, who are starting from an early age, I typically combine playtime and learning. For example, for the youngest students, I use the analogy of the seven colors of the rainbow to learn the music notes. Throughout my years of teaching using this technique, I've received a lot of positive feedback from the students that as learning kept them interested and excited about learning the instrument. I began teaching percussion immediately after high school. While attending EKU, I helped my former high school by teaching the percussion section during the marching band season. I taught the section every year for about 12 years before being hired as a full-time teacher and becoming the assistant director of the band. I still mainly focus on the percussion section every year, but my responsibilities have spread to assisting with other sections of the band as well. Read More

Most of my students use Alfred's Piano Course. After just a few lessons, we add in additional books and songs to expose the student to as much music as possible. I believe that the more music a student is exposed to, the better a musician he or she becomes. With the exception of recital pieces, I rarely spend more than a few weeks on one song, but instead focus on guiding students to play a wide variety of music at their level. Read More
