I began teaching piano my sophomore year of college. During my college career, I built up a studio of nearly 20 students, tutored college-level piano courses, and worked as a Teacher's Assistant in Sight Singing and Aural Training. Since then, I taught for two years at a Summer Music Conservatory in Texas, led week-long keyboard intensive seminars throughout Western Kenya, and most recently, taught at the nation's largest piano conservatory. I began teaching percussion immediately after high school. While attending EKU, I helped my former high school by teaching the percussion section during the marching band season. I taught the section every year for about 12 years before being hired as a full-time teacher and becoming the assistant director of the band. I still mainly focus on the percussion section every year, but my responsibilities have spread to assisting with other sections of the band as well. Read More

We begin to work on the voice that way, and then graduate to vocal exercises from the Vaccai exercise book and simple vocal pieces such as folk songs or one of the 24 Italian Arias. As students advance, or if they come to me at an advanced stage already, we move on to more difficult art songs or arias from operas, or branch out into the student's desired repertoire if they do not wish to study classical voice specifically. I used other activities such as walking, running, dancing, and boxing to demonstrate performance techniques and to make students understand the importance of natural gesture, inertia, and relaxation. I provided students with a "Good Sound" repertoire that spanned different levels of difficulty and incorporated folk, popular, jazz, and traditional classical music to match their needs and interests. My approach to teaching is to make sure my students have fun while they're learning and growing. It's important for students to learn to have fun while playing the same scale or rudiment over and over, and I think this is entirely possible! I also think it's important for students to see just exactly what their hard work is striving them toward.
