I'm comfortable teaching students ages 4+ but prefer starting at 7. Most of the time I'll use John Thompson series adding knowledge of harmony, rhythm and scales. I tailor my lessons to specific interest/needs of the each student. Currently I'm writing my own methods (voice & piano) in a series of progresive books/videos.  Read More

Ive been told I am a very encouraging teacher. My goal is to teach the student something new in every class. Lessons can focus on technique, performance, sight reading / singing, ear training, music history, music theory, composition, improvisation, fakebooks and more. Piano lessons can cover everything from how to sit at the piano to using rotational movements to get accuracy in large leaps. I focus on musicality. A student does have to be Lang Lang to sound beautiful. Read More

I have experience for more than 14 years teaching, where I had the great honor of forming a very good generation of musicians that today play with children, youth and high level orchestras in Venezuela and in other parts of the world. I was the founder of the system of Adventist orchestras in my country and I was part of the formation and direction of more than 300 young people during the 2 years that I was in charge of the first school of Adventist music of Venezuela which was created in San Cristobal, state of Tachira Read More

Seeing my students develop a passion for music is very rewarding. Each student progresses to their own pace; no rush whatsoever. Setting goals that they can achieve will encourage them to progress on track. Acknowledging their accomplishments will keep their desire to continue learning more. I recommend that when they practice, to have them play it for an audience, like family or friends. That way they can be comfortable playing for others because when they are put into recitals, Student Day, the National Guild of Piano Teachers, etc. they'll be able to play at ease, and at the same time, enjoy it too. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More

What does a normal practice session look like for you?
A normal practice session starts with relaxation , deep and slow breathing , mental focus and visualization of the action about to take place. Finding the correct position and start with slow ,light notes for some minutes in order to focus and relax. In the guitar it would be right hand notes on each string and then slow easy melodies and two part contrapuntal music. In the piano ,slow and light symmetrical excercises on both hands slowly stretching out and in with the objective of warming up. A small break of 5-10 minutes A second session of either slow left hand patterns from boogie-woogie or blues in the form of a vamp or a groove and then finding a way to input either lines or chords with the right hand or an alternate session of slow two part and then three part contrapuntal music alla Bach. For Guitar either a session of right hand rasgueados or strumming different rhythms or bass patterns to create a vamp until ideas flow on how to input melodies in between strong beats or and alternate section of slow Bach music. A short break and a third section of scales and arpeggios A short break and a final section of repertoire.

If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
My degree is from Havana Cuba. The system is set for a degree in both performance and teaching for instruments. Anyone who graduates from performance also graduates as a teacher. I chose performance on my instrument because I love it but I was ok with the array of other subjects that are mandatory among them piano as a second instrument and all the music theory and history.

What is your dream piece to perform and why?
In guitar my dream piece is Rememberings of Alhambra by Francisco Tarrega. I love it because it is a tremolo piece and the melody is extremely beautiful which makes it sound magical. In piano I love an arrangement for Air on the G string by Bach because of its depth , majesty and emotion.

If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
Probably translation or teaching languages.

What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
Late romantic ,early impressionistic with a pinch of world music , bit of the blues and jazz. Somewhere between Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, George Gershwin , Ravel and Joaquin Rodrigo. I think Rodrigo represents my Spanish heritage, Ravel is refined , Tedesco was the teacher of John Williams and Gershwin is a riot.

If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
Guitar was easier to get. It was popular and accessible but piano is very important for music theory and composition. It also creates more sound and wider range. Voice is the most direct communicator of words and messages.

Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
My father sang at home and in parties with friends and acquaintances. He also had a good appreciation for music of classical and operatic provenance. My uncle on my father's side became a wonderful popular guitar player by sheer genius. Sophisticated chords accompanying his popular songs and ballads in Spanish and a good singer too. All natural. On my mother's side, my aunt has a velvet voice and gorgeous singing and two of my cousins became professional musicians of popular and dance music in the guitar in their neighborhood where they did the parties.

When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
Not long after starting music at age nine I knew this is my companion for life as a profession. It was not a gradual decision it was pretty much natural and spontaneous. Music was a prestigious and nice profession in Cuba , in Havana where many venues were built for that purpose and many people take lessons out of love for the music and the fun it provides.

...musician to think about a piece of music being played within a certain key, players play the piece note for note without a designated key. These pieces feature tons of flats and sharps. This doesn’t mean that passages found in these pieces don’t fall within the boundaries of a set key signature necessarily, but because there are so many changes happening so fast that it’s easier to think of the whole piece as something that lacks a set key.     Why Composers Use Accidentals   Composers use accidentals because playing within one set key all the time is boring. Certain lead sheets may have guitar chord notation alongside the chord symbols. Some lead sheets may also have a second staff with a bass line or a harmony line if it is a necessary part of the arrangement. The Best Age to Start Flute Lessons

...What is the best age to start flute lessons? Musika receives many calls from parents looking to start their young child (age 3 or 4) out with formal private flute lessons, but many times the student’s just aren’t old enough to get started. While it’s great to start learning music at an early age, parents must make sure students are both physically and academically ready to begin studying the flute. The most important factor when starting flute is deciding whether or not the student’s hands are large enough to facilitate playing its numerous keys. As a wind instrument, it is also important that the student has the developed lung capacity to play – at the earliest lessons usually begin around age 7 or 8. If a student starts out playing the flute and they are ... Read More
