Most of my students use Alfred's Piano Course. After just a few lessons, we add in additional books and songs to expose the student to as much music as possible. I believe that the more music a student is exposed to, the better a musician he or she becomes. With the exception of recital pieces, I rarely spend more than a few weeks on one song, but instead focus on guiding students to play a wide variety of music at their level. Read More

I teach in the bel canto style as I was taught, focusing on developing a greater capacity for breath control, relaxation of the tongue and jaw, good posture, and freedom of movement. However, I tailor every lesson to the student's needs and focus on addressing the vocal issues they face on a given day and in general. I develop a plan for the student each week, like learning a section of a piece or working on diction in a specific verse, but adapt this plan depending on how the student feels that day and what their input is. My approach to teaching is to make sure my students have fun while they're learning and growing. It's important for students to learn to have fun while playing the same scale or rudiment over and over, and I think this is entirely possible! I also think it's important for students to see just exactly what their hard work is striving them toward. For beginning students, who are starting from an early age, I typically combine playtime and learning. For example, for the youngest students, I use the analogy of the seven colors of the rainbow to learn the music notes. Throughout my years of teaching using this technique, I've received a lot of positive feedback from the students that as learning kept them interested and excited about learning the instrument. My teaching style includes using multisensory techniques that get the students reading music, listening to music, playing music, and more. I have discovered over many years of teaching that there are many different styles of learning different concepts. What may click for a student in one part of a lesson visually may not click aurally. Twenty minutes later, they may need the lesson explained differently. As a high school teacher, I must be prepared to deliver information in multiple ways multiple times a day. Read More
