My formal teaching experience began at East Carolina University in my undergraduate years. I had the opportunity to work as an instructor for the Jazz Track at the ECU Summer Music Camp for four years before I moved on to graduate school at Peabody Conservatory. I supplement some of the things in the book with other literature and hand written exercise to help enhance learning experience. I try to assess each student and develop an individual learning plan for them based on their goals, expectations, and ambitions. Typically for classical piano students, I use Alfred’s curriculum (both the student and Adult levels depending on need) and once a classical foundation is learned, we venture into ear training and learning a variety of genres. My teaching experiences began in college where I'd work with fellow students in regards to perfecting their violin skills. After graduating college I worked a little bit with a middle school student. I encourage my students to practice at least 20 mins a day vs. playing for an hour and coming into practice. My method when teaching students that are starters (kids) i used books like teaching little fingers to play piano and john Thompson which introduce learning of notes, their instrument, posture, and rhythm. Most of these books are in sets and will take the student to an advanced bigger player! From here I incorporate a method of learning at least 3-4 pieces ( A piece that has mostly a melodic line, a piece that concerns more of rhythmic exercises and then to a last piece which is a study) i will also top it up with scales and arpeggios and also a sense of knowing your instrument overall, listening , Aural and also incorporate sight reading .
