Also, there is a massive backlash against the pharmaceutical industry for over-prescribing drugs for things like ADHD. Instead, doctors are now recommending music lessons to burn off that excess energy a child may have. Also, a teacher has to be able to have the social skills to 'read' a student. Read More

Depending upon what area/instrument of music I'm teaching, I use a number of different materials, including (but not limited to) Tonal Harmony (Kostka, et al.), Essential Dictionary of Music Notation, Accent on Achievement, Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, or Rock House Method (McCarthy). The skill level of the student also dictates what resources I'll use. Learning piano is a long-time investment so I try to encourage patience and perseverance. We set goals each week that help to motivate and keep track of the students progress. With younger students, the parents support is vital. Every week I make sure to keep them informed of what the student is working on so they can offer support and encouragement at home. Read More
