Instruments: Piano Voice Saxophone Flute Synthesizer
PIANO, FLUTE, SAXOPHONE and VOICE I have been active in the music industry for over 40 years as a teacher and performer, along with holding positions as musical director, arranger, accompanist, and in show production. Growing up near New York City gave me a wealth of opportunities for musical studies and experiences. I first studied with concert pianist Frank Giampolo for many years in Bridgeport, CT. He recognized my love of jazz and incorporated it, along with a classical repertoire, theory, harmony and arranging into my private studies. Read More

When I think about a student learning wintry to put myself in there shoes. They want to feel like they have something to show for the time that they were the class session. . if we have an hour session and at the end of the session they can go out and show off what they learned then they will. It be as motivated to come back.... So my method is to teach them while at the same time giving a practical aspect where they have something that can show and practice to develop the skill learned in the proviso session. Read More

For beginning students, I start with the Essential Elements book. If the student has already taken lessons or is in their school band/orchestra, I encourage moving onto the Rubank Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced method books depending on ability. Once a student has proven that they are able to handle it, I will start on solo repertoire. Particularly for college-bound musicians who wish to major in music, the majority of their lessons will be based on preparing solo literature for All District or college auditions. Read More

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I chose the clarinet in 5th grade because I saw some "cool girls" playing the clarinet in our school concert and I liked the look of it! Parents often ask me if they should let their child play the instrument they wish to play even though the parents do not especially like the instrument. Or, they think that he or she may not stick with it because the instrument is too heavy to lug around!
I feel that the child should be the one to make the choice because he or she will hopefully be playing it for many years, so it's important to love it. At such a young age, the students decision making process is developing so the music instructor can be of great help in selecting the right instrument. Ideally, the teacher will have several instruments for the beginners to try. They can hold it, get the feel of the weight of it, practice walking with the case, to aid in the making of an educated, and true choice.
Have any of your students won awards or been selected for special honors? How have they succeeded?
One of the greatest joys in teaching music is helping my students to achieve their goals and aspirations. I have had hundreds of students attain the highest NYSSMA rating of 100 at the grade 6 level (the highest level of achievement playing professional literature) and play in NY State All County, Area All State and All State ensembles. I have had students graduate from music colleges and gone on to become music educators. I have several students who have gone on to play professionally.
But without a doubt, it is the notes and letters from students who have gone on to other professions telling me how important music class and lessons were in their lives, that hold a special place in my heart. Here is a quote from Sarah S. who just wrote me last week:
"Your inspiration and influence has gone well beyond the classroom. I am a teacher now myself. I teach Technology at a large K-8 school in CA. I have three sons who all play piano, sing and play baseball. Thank you for everything!"
Super rewarding!
What is your dream piece to perform and why?
I love playing the Brahms Sonatas in E flat and F minor for Clarinet and Piano. They are lyrical, exciting and beautifully constructed works. The clarinet and piano parts inter twine artfully. They have been transcribed for viola as well, and I enjoy hearing a string interpretation. I also love playing Schubert's "The Shepard on the Rock"
( der Hirt auf dem Felsen) for Soprano, Clarinet and Piano.
Super dramatic yearning for love lost! The trio ensemble as an art form is appealing to me, intimate, yet all three parts exciting and musically demanding.
