Teaching is something I have always felt passionately about. I first started teaching at the age of 14, teaching martial arts to young kids nearly every day at my stepfather’s martial arts school. As I grew up and began taking music more seriously, teaching remained an important part of my life: as clarinet section leader in the Marine Corps Forces Pacific Band in Hawaii, I was responsible for administering weekly lessons to other clarinet players in the band, and I also worked with several school music programs in Hawaii, developing and leading masterclasses for K-12 students. I frequently assign listening homework, and I play audio recordings and videos during lessons that directly pertain to the areas we are focusing on. For example, if we are working on a classical solo piece, the student may watch footage of that piece being performed by a world-renowned saxophonist. This approach helps to keep things interesting and engaging. I will also record the audio of certain lessons so both myself and the student can track improvement. Read More

I have been a part of the City Music program for the last decade, both in Cleveland and in Boston. Through that, I have been able to both receive and pass on an excellent music education. I was a mentor for younger students when I was college, leading me to be involved in the local high school big bands. I would lead rehearsals, saxophone sectionals, and work one on one with students to make sure they were creatively and mentally engaged and that they knew what areas they could work on to improve.
