It is a succinct, affordable resource that will not leave a student lacking. When I teach any advanced brass player I use Arbans conservatory method, Clarke Technical Studies, and the brass gym. To start, I like to have students use the Beginner Rubank Method Book (the blue book) and work through this to get the basics down. After this, I like to choose some supplemental solo pieces that aren't in this book to help the students grasp the concepts that they have been working on, outside of what is shown in the book. While I focus on the makings of a good classical trombonist, I also inquire what kinds of music each student likes and incorporate that into the lessons so they have something fun they can relate to while still developing their skills. For the more advanced student I start to introduce excerpts from band and orchestras to teach style that they can bring into the ensembles they play in.
