For beginning students, I focus on the very first fundamentals of playing trombone and music which consists of simple music theory and fundamental technique of playing the trombone. Once those fundamentals are introduced and the students shows progression, I will assign etudes and solo repertoire to help improve on musicality and technique. I tend to perform for students in lessons so they can receive a better idea of how to play a specific passage as well as just playing fun pieces to get them excited in lessons. Read More

I grew up in Gillette Wyoming playing Euphonium and Trombone, also achieving 4 years in the all state band. From there, I went to the University of North Texas, and my world grew so much larger. As the largest Euphonium studio in the world, I was blown out of the water at the ability level of the players around me. I achieved both a Bachelors and a Masters degree in Euphonium performance. I typically start without the instrument at first and focus on breathing, posture, and building muscle memory with slide positions. With intermediate to advanced students, I like to focus on the theory/science behind trombone playing. With a major focus on fundamentals, I build upon the student’s foundations and help to finesse the way they hear their sound in accordance with other players. Read More

I always have the student start by developing a practice routine consisting of long tones, flexibility exercises, scales and the different tonguing attacks; single, double, legato and staccato. Next perhaps finding out what their interest are so we can pick out the appropriate materials.
