For beginner students who are children, I usually start with the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has advanced to where I can see that they have a good grasp of the fundamentals of the instrument, that is typically when I begin to introduce solo repertoire and supplement with my own material. For adult beginners, I typically will try and use the Essential Elements book to start with but not for very long. Read More

When learning to play an instrument, I believe it is important to start at a slow pace to make sure students comprehend all of the musical elements. To all of my students, I will treat them with kindness and honesty. Honesty is important as a teacher because my goal is to help students find where they can grow and show them ways to do so. For all of my students, I expect them to practice each day and put all of their attention to refining their art. Read More

I began teaching private lessons part-time during my undergraduate, and I have worked full-time in education, either as a band director or private lesson teacher, for the past 14 years. As a Bachelor's and Master's student, I honed my musicianship and technique to an incredible degree; as a band director, I learned a great deal about how to connect with and break concepts down for young students. Throughout both periods, my students have found success, with several placing first or second chair in All-Region auditions and earning Outstanding Soloist in solo contests. Read More

I have been a music educator in the public schools for over 40 years having taught in Austin, Texas and currently in Fort Worth, Texas. Many of my students have gone to play their instruments in college bands throughout the state. Several former students are currently teaching music at the secondary and college level. I do not approach my teaching to focus on a student's future as a musician. All make individual choices on musical endeavors. Read More

My goal with my students is always to see them enjoy themselves while growing as musicians. I want to know what inspires my students and what they strive for as well, though it's always okay if they can't answer that immediately. Learning an instrument is a journey. I believe that the most important part of my teaching style is positive reinforcement. The most successful teachers and mentors that I know or have studied with readily acknowledge a student's strengths and are not afraid of letting them know when they are proud of their students. Given the trust level that it takes, a bond is definitely formed. Each being very unique, memorable, and adventurous over all. As a private instructor I have seen several ups and downs, whether through the music they are working on or a personal problem, but it is great to see how having something that they are passionate brings this new perspective in everything they do. No matter age, background, aspirations nor gender, music is universal that could bring joy to us all no matter what side of the spectrum we are on. Read More
