Instruments: Trombone

The Arban book is available for free on PDF. For beginning students, I discuss long tones, sound, and simple scale studies. Once students grasp the fundamentals, I like to teach how they relates to the music they listen to. Through this, students can learn how theory and scales become music As we get advanced, I like to move in to scale studies, technical warm ups, and theory. When working on a recital performance, or simply learning the instrument, I like to concentrate on listening, developing a clean and full sound, breathing, and musicality. Read More

Instruments: Trombone

I have an easy-going style of teaching where I focus on the interests of the student first. The reality of learning an instrument is that unless practice is fun and interesting, there will not be enough of it. As such, I make sure to gamify the practice and find concrete ways to measure the progress of the student. In the end, I find that building a deep interest and encouraging a passion for music is a sure-fire way for students to grow as musicians while enjoying the journey at the same time. Read More

Instruments: Trumpet Trombone Euphonium Tuba

I am a very patient teacher and I understand that students learn at different paces. Therefore I set realistic goals that the student can achieve and WANT to achieve. By setting a goal they can and want to achieve through 10-15 minute practices over 3, 4, 5, or even 6 days a week, it pushes the student to put in the minimal work to progress and grow to be the musician they want too be or even didn't know they could be. I approach teaching in layers. Step one leads to step two, we cant skip steps! I find it important that for beginners we follow this structure. More advanced students will be on a case by case basis in regards to where we start. I emphasize imprivisation in every lesson weather it be on drums, piano or trombone. Playing music right off the top of your head, and in the moment is something you can't learn out of a book! Read More

I strongly believe that a well-rounded music education helps a player to become a more confident, musical, and an emotionallyyaware musician. As such, I like to give my students small assignments focused on topics besides just performance, such as Music Theory and Aural Skills exercises. Of course, I will always move at the pace the student needs but I also know (from personal experience) that a nudge in the right direction can be priceless. Read More

Instruments: Piano Voice Trumpet Trombone Saxophone Flute Clarinet Euphonium Oboe Bassoon

I am very familiar with all of the standard piano methods, and will evaluate the student in the first few lessons to choose a method that they will be the most comfortable with.  I supplement all lessons with music theory and outside repertoire, allowing the students to choose from their favorite genres/artists.  For theatre, musical theatre, and vocal coaching, I also employ Linklater and Alexander techniques. I also really enjoy exposing students to styles, genres or artists that they might not be familiar with along with the history behind the music they're learning! Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonards Essential Elements book, as well a basic understanding of music. Once the student has progressed to have a nice grasp of the fundamentals of music, I usually begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. I also believe in the importance of listening to as many professional recordings as possible of the instrument the student is taking lessons on. Read More
