I graduated from the University of Connnecticut, Storrs, with a Bachelor of Science in Music Education in 1972, and a Master of Music degree, with a concentration in Piano Pedagogy in 1980. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for student, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. If a student is not having fun in their lessons, then I am not doing my job! My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. For students in a beginning band program, I will use whatever method book they are currently using. For students not in a band program I like to use the Rubank Method. To build upon those method books, I like using the Arban book and the Cimera phrasing studies. Because sight reading and ensemble playing are very important to my teaching style, every lesson will begin with a couple duets. It is my goal to help young students build the skills needed to master their band music without my help on it every week. Read More
