The first lesson is always a trial lesson, in it I attempt to access where the student is musically. I also use the time to find out what the student's musical goals are . We look at things like reading, theory, dexterity on the instrument. If the student plays a wind instrument we look at things like embouchure and breathing. Once I have gotten a good idea as to the student's skill level and have spoken to the student about their musical goals and interests. Read More

There is a lot more to playing the trumpet than just blowing into the horn. Breathing, embouchure, and tuning are essential elements of playing the trumpet. I will focus on these things at the beginning of the lesson because it affects the sound every time we play. Then, I will use different books depending on the level of the students or we can go over pieces you have from being in an ensemble. Read More

Teaching music is one of the most rewarding experiences, and I thoroughly enjoy it. I believe that studying diverse styles of music is very important. I encourage my students to listen to all kinds of music outside of their own genre, as having different influences creates a more well rounded musician. Inspiration and motivation are huge factors when it comes to private teachers. I have been lucky enough to have studied with some of the most inspirational teachers in the world and I will do everything I can to pass on that inspiration to my students! Read More

I like to emphasize fundamentals, especially if a student is just beginning. I believe a strong foundation makes it easier as they progress. For all instruments I always have my students prepare both technical exercises and solo material. I always emphasize historical context to bring the music to life. I also like to teach the music theory side of music, explaining chords, sequences and progressions. I can inform students how to improvise in jazz, as well as play at the level required for symphonic performance. Read More

I first began taking private students in the 1990s, and continued to teach privately through my undergraduate years in the early 2000s. Though I stopped for some time to pursue artistic and professional ventures in music, I recently returned to the teaching realm, and am exciting to take on new students. In addition to private brass lessons, I have taught music in public schools through various non-profits and, above all, enjoy the light that comes on in a student's eyes when he/she "gets it." It is why I do what I do. Read More

For beginners, I use the Standards of Excellence book, especially if they are young children because that is the book that they will most likely use in middle school or high school. These books are good for teaching the fundamentals. I also assign a solo piece based on skill level along with an excerpt of a song that the student wants to learn. For more advanced students I use the Arban's book because all trumpet players learn from this book; from intermediate players all the way up to professionals. Read More
