While I expect progress for the serious student I also fully recognize the limitations and conflicts of "life getting in the way". I am a big proponent of giving compliments whenever possible. For beginning students, I start with the Essential Elements book. If the student has already taken lessons or is in their school band/orchestra, I encourage moving onto the Rubank Elementary, Intermediate, and Advanced method books depending on ability. Once a student has proven that they are able to handle it, I will start on solo repertoire. I am a young aspiring student just like those that I teach and, therefore I enjoy having fun and keeping the student engaged as I understand how hard it is to focus when beginning to play an instrument like the trumpet which may seems mundane at first. My main quote for success is to,"aim for the moon and if you fail you will land among the stars." I encourage my students to set goals that may be a little outside of their comfort zone, but I will never set a goal that is outside the level of achievement for a specific students skills. For students of all ages and skill sets I first like to establish a personalized daily routine of fundamental exercises such as long tones, lip slurs, tone production and articulation if not already had. I use the Bill Adam approach to teaching my establishing a strong core understanding and playing of the instrument.
