Minho G

Instruments: Trumpet

I am a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. I am originally from Seoul, Korea and came to the U.S.A. back in 2006 to study at the University of North Texas for my master degree. During the years at the UNT, I was taught by the legendary trumpet teacher, Keith Johnson and worked with world-renowned band conductors such as Eugene Corporon and Dennis Fisher. Read More

Instruments: Piano Trumpet

The approach I take is individualized and utilizes multiple teaching methods. Every student brings unique qualities and different interests and it is my job to find a way to connect those qualities and interests to music. One thing I emphasize is continued learning. If we are working on fundamentals of piano technique I find a way to slowly introduce more concepts that will be developed later on in our lessons. Read More

Clynt Y

Instruments: Piano Guitar Trumpet

A Texas native, Clynt grew up exposed to a variety of music. The southern influence of blues, gospel, country, and jazz were a huge part of his musical upbringing. While his formal training was largely in classical music for many years, he also remembers learning his first tunes note-by-not from his father (a jazz and country musician) in their living room in Texas when he was not out of elementary school.  Having experienced both formal and informal training methods all of his life, he is adept at providing either - or any ratio - of the two to a student in need. I then received my Masters of Arts in Music Education along with New York state certification for grades Pre-K through 12th grade. The year I graduated with my masters I was hired to work for the New York city Department of Education teaching general music and Band to grades Pre-K through eighth grade. I loved teaching, but I knew I wanted to learn more, which brings me to where I am now. Read More

Isaiah S

Instruments: Trumpet

My teaching experience dates back to my junior year of high school. I first began providing private lessons to local children that attended the local middle school that I had also attended myself. Consistency is the most important thing that I have stressed to all of my students. Consistency in practicing is vital to training your lips, fingers, and lungs to match what you have in your mind. I have also found that younger students enjoy playing pop and jazz more than they enjoy classical pieces. Read More

Instruments: Trumpet

For my beginning students, I have them start with KJOS Standards Of Excellence. Once they have began to learn the techniques to properly play, I will begin them with repitoire that I find suitable for them to play and also what they would like to learn so this way the students are learning what they want, which makes the music learning process even more enjoyable! By making a individual lesson plan it allows my students to be able to advance at their own pace and also have the students learn their instruments even better. Read More

Instruments: Piano Trumpet Saxophone Flute Clarinet Music Keyboard

What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
My main love is classical music. It always will be. I enjoy playing jazz and blues as well but I will always favor classical music. This is why I insistent that my students learn to read music. You simply cannot accelerate the learning process without reading music. I have had adult students who think that it is too late for them to learn to read music. That is simply incorrect. If anything it is more important for the adult to read because they can make better use of their practice time if they learn to read some simple figures.

If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I played clarinet since fourth grade. My brother played saxophone and since I thought that it was like the clarinet I started playing it as well. When I auditioned at college on clarinet I got in so I started playing other instruments as well. In college I got serious about playing piano. Piano is an instrument that I have a lot of experience with. I started to get serious about flute because the agents who booked weddings wanted reed players who could double on flute so they could play quietly during the cocktail hour. I learned trumpet as a band director and guitar because I taught in catholic schools for a while and they had a lot of students who wanted guitar lessons.

Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
My parents sang in school groups as students but they never really played any instruments. Because I was the oldest of four my two younger brothers and younger sister joined school bands following my lead. None of them pursued music after high school but their kids play band instruments and I try to help them out. My one niece is in a middle school band in Georgia. And my nephew here in NJ just started playing clarinet. His little sister also plays flute and is in a music program as well. They all came to music naturally and on their own. I never insist that anyone play an instrument unless they want to and then they should give it their all.

When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
I gravitated out of music once and that was enough for me to realize that I have to be involved with music on a full time basis. I tried sales for a few years but I really didn't like it. I am not knocking it because I had some success for awhile with it but I just couldn't make a career of it. I was a band director in public schools for over ten years that wasn't bad but I greatly prefer being a private instructor working on my own. The whole school thing took me away from my instruments for awhile but it gave me some great training in teaching and developing lessons.
