I started on violin in 4th grade and switched to viola in 6th grade.  I was involved in private lessons, youth orchestras, competitions, City, District, Regional and All State orchestras while I was growing up.  In 1991 I graduated from the State University of New York with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Music.  From there I attended Carnegie Mellon University and received my Music Education Certification in 1995.  I received my Masters in Music in 2000 from the University of Denver. In all of my teaching, I combine my students' interests with the leading pedagogy practices in string education to develop the foundational skills of the instrument as well as a fondness for it. There are several method books that I use such as Suzuki, Schroeder's Cello Etudes, and Fiddler's Philharmonic, however, I tailor each lesson path to each student based on student interest as well as proper sequencing. I find that we can get so caught up in getting the notes that we forget about important things like making sure we’re breathing normally and standing in a secure way. If a student has difficulty in a passage, I try to avoid statements like “you missed that note” and instead steer towards asking questions like “what would happen if you relaxed here?” Or “What does this passage remind you of?” I find that lessons centered around this teaching style are enjoyable for everyone and, even more importantly: they help students learn how to teach themselves how to practice. I began to teach privately as a teenager and have continued to do so both as a private instructor and as a faculty member of several music schools.
