During my masters degree I studied Suzuki pedagogy. While I don't follow the method exactly, I do incorporate much of the philosophy into my own teaching. With beginners, I prefer to teach the violin by ear so that my students can focus on their technique rather than reading music, while developing strong listening skills that are important for playing any instrument in any style. My teaching style revolves around guiding each student through the mental process of developing one's music skills, both in a technical and musical sense. I believe everyone is capable of becoming a fantastic violinist, as long as they are shown what to focus on and what to look out for in their own relationship with the violin. Often, students are thrown into the deep end and asked to swim.
