Now, almost 40 years later, I am teaching full time Orchestra with APS and have become highly proficient in violin, viola and string bass playing. I started teaching music classes in 1992. As a public school music teacher, I have taught students in grades 1-12. I taught concert band, jazz band, marching band, string orchestra, full orchestra, and general music. I have conducted a women's chorale and taught college as well. For 7 years, I trained music education students and supervised their teaching experiences. My beginners start on violin, and the first few weeks learning the basics of position and posture. Then I start them with Suzuki Book 1 and supplemental rhythm and theory exercises. After book 1, I assess their progress and drive and either switch them to Barbara Barber's Solos for Young Violinists, or have them stay through Suzuki Book 2 and 3. If my students have interest in viola, I encourage them to stay on violin until they are in high school or even longer (through Mozart concertos) if possible. Read More

I start by gathering information about a student's goals and inspirations, and prior knowledge/experience. From there, we develop a plan for warmup exercises, technical exercises, literature, sight-reading, ear-training and listening excerpts to be studied. I determine whether the student needs to begin learning primarily by ear or using some kind of written notation. We find a schedule that will work with both of us. Most students have a regular weekly time, but some students need a variable time due to their individual schedule so we work that out in advance. Read More
