Instruments: Drums
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
I started learning piano when I was 6 years old, and I quit when I was 12, because it wasn't fun.
Then I switched to Guitar and Bass when was 13 because I was a huge Rock kid, I wanted to play a Rock music in a band, so I started to learn those. After 2 years of playing Guitar and Bass, I was asked to join a band that a friend of mine was trying to start, and I was asked to play Drums in that band. I immediately said YES, as I wanted to try something new. The first time I touch drums for band rehearsal, that was the moment of changing my life. I felt like I have finally found something I truly love. From then I started to focus on professional career as a Drummer.
What musical accomplishments are you most proud of?
First of all, the fact that I graduated from one of the top music college in the world. I worked very hard on passing every class, and now I gained a huge amount of skills and knowledge. I am very prod that I did it.
Secondly, I did a lot of performance with a lot of great musicians from the college, I have learned hot to be organized, how to be hired as session player constantly, and how to be a good musician. By playing with a lot of great musicians, I grew a lot as a musician and I am very proud of every performance that I did.
What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
Aside from techniques, I think, to be able to express emotions with drum is one of the hardest things to master on drum set. You ave to be a good time keeper, you have to be a good listener, and also you have to be a good leader sometimes. Depends on the context of music that you're playing in a band, you have to understand a right moment to go in the front, and also back off. Drum is considered as a fundamental instrument that doesn't stand out in a band, I disagree with that. Drum has to be a huge part of a band, and Drums can totally be in the front with an appropriate context.
To be able to understand this concept is one of the hardest things to learn.
What does a normal practice session look like for you?
I usually have specific phrase that I work on for first 1,2 hours. I will simply play it repeatedly so that I will become a muscle memory, and after that I will apply that in a context. For example, play a 3 bars of groove and one bar of fills that includes the phrase that I am learning. After that, I will spend time on learning songs that I have to learn or want to learn. I usually transcribe drum part in case I get stuck, and also for the sake of training sight reading skill. For this hours, the most important thing for me is to have a specific idea for each song, and express it with my ability as much as I can.
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I have a Degree called Professional Music, which you can build up your own major by taking some parts of classes from different majors. I was focusing, on Performance, Music Business, and Music Production and Engineering.
I focused on Performance for the most, as I simply love performing, and I am always eager to be a better performer. The reason why I took Music Business as focus, is because now a days you have to be smart to sell your self without hiring a lawyer or a manager. And to know what you have to do when you want sell your music would definitely make you a better musician.
The reason why I focused on Music Engineering, is because nowadays, to be able to produce your self is a mandatory skill to have if you're a musician, and learning how to be a self producer from one of the best music college is a huge plus for me. There are why i focused on those 3 i mentioned above.
