For beginning students who are children, I like to start with Essential Elements and then progress to the Suzuki Method books. Later I might supplement this material with etudes and duets or pop song arrangements. For adults, I first determine their priorities and then focus my instruction on what will keep their lessons fun and engaging. Whether the student is interested in playing chamber music with friends, participating in a community orchestra, or just improving their skills so that they can experience the joy of making music, I am happy to tailor the lessons to meet their needs, Read More

My teaching experience goes back as far as high school when I started volunteering to teach violin lessons to younger students. In my college years, I taught as part of Oberlin Conservatory's secondary lessons program in addition to teaching members of the Oberlin community of different ages and levels. Currently, I maintain private studios in multiple locations as an addition to my Musika students. My teaching experience as a violin instructor and educator has given me the chance to grow through my students' achievements and has transformed my life in a positive way. Read More

When i teach a student who is just starting on a string instrument and has never played before i usually start them with the Suzuki books and cds. I find having a cd or recording to listen to and play along with is a great help. Other books i use with beginners in addition to the Suzuki books that have recordings too are Solos For Young Violinists, solos for young violists, and Fiddle Sessions by Charlie Hall, and Bela Bartok's 44 violin duets. Sharing my knowledge with my students and seeing them achieve something they worked hard for, and being part of the process is one of the biggest joys in teaching for me. I always aim to help my students produce a beautiful tone, while making sure they are not doing wrong physical movements that would make things difficult. I remember when I helped a 6 year old start the violin from scratch, and not too long after, she was able to play happy birthday to her grandparents and even on her own birthday. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I usually would like to encourage them starts to play with little simple songs, likes many of songs they already can singing with. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. Read More
