I try to relate the student's study of their instrument to their school work and what music they might be studying in school or encountering in their daily lives. With adults it is important to discover what other music lessons they have had and what their experiences with music have been. During lessons I give much attention to detail and attempt to balance discipline with the student's enjoyment of the experience. Read More

I have been teaching both private and group lessons for ten years, teaching students in their homes, my home, and after. I have noticed a lot of violin students tend to be tense, and judgmental against themselves, so afraid of making a "mistake." So my first task is often to get them to relax, and love playing the violin. I search for ways to make it fun for them and help them learn the music they want to play. Read More

My teaching experience started in high school when my private teacher started teaching me how to teach. I then accepted students on a continual basis, usually working two jobs. I realized at a later point in my life that I would like to make teaching my profession and started getting more serious about how I would proceed with teaching music. I have had students for over 25 years and without a doubt, parental involvement and practice are the two main factors for success of young students, along with a good teacher. Read More

My strong point as a teacher is figuring out how each student best learns. Everybody has a different style of learning, and I make sure to cater to the student's needs in that way. My lessons are light-hearted yet very productive. The most important skill for a student to have is to know how to practice efficiently. I set my students up for success by teaching them practice methods as well as looking at small details in the music in order to make them a better player. Read More

Music is experienced ears-first, and that's how I prefer to teach. I certainly teach everyone to read music if they don't already know how, but I really like to help people hear the music they want to make. This is done through listening assignments, playing with my students during lessons, some music memorization, and singing. I also incorporate a lot of improvisation games to get students making sounds pressure-free and help them access their inner expressive voice. Read More
