I am somewhat flexible on books and methods, but unless my students have already invested time and money in a particular published method, I start them on the Bastien series, which is not too expensive and is well designed and effective. As they progress to intermediate, they will be expected to buy some classical music, collections, and technique books. When first taking private viola lessons I studied Wohfahrt Etudes. Playing 1-2 level appropriate pieces is a great amount. Repertoire from the Suzuki books are fundamental stepping stones into becoming a better musician. I always enjoyed when I got to play a piece that I chose out myself, so I want to allow my students to find a piece of music on their own that they would love to play. Read More

Much of my approach to teaching is determined by the individual student. I want my students to be the best musicians they can be, and that does require a certain amount of pressure. To the extent that I can for each, I push my students to progress quickly. It can get boring to practice the same piece over and over without variation, so practicing is required.
