I have recently finished the fourth and final year of my doctorate degree in voice at the University of Oklahoma and am currently working on my dissertation. At OU, I studied with former Metropolitan opera baritone Kim Josephson. I was a good singer when I arrived at OU, but Kim, who has taken lessons from the opera legend Corelli himself, has transformed how I sing. I base my teaching methods on the student I am teaching. For students that are children at a beginner level, I typically begin with the essential elements of creating vocal foundation which I draw from many sources. Once we have set a good foundation, we tend to begin working on repertoire that is appropriate for the level at which they are singing, using those songs as learning opportunities. We learn to speak through trial and error having no wrong words and music should be taught in a similar fashion, where there are no wrong notes. We learn our speaking style, manner and/or accents by what we hear and this concept also applies to music; therefore listening is a crucial part for advancement and the pleasure of learning. Some students love classical music, and we work on Italian arias...while others love 80s Metal Bands, and we work on healthy ways to approach contemporary music.
