At the beginning of lessons, I always check in with them to see how their progress was for the week and any questions or concerns that arose in their practice. I find this puts the ownership on them to reflect on their week of music making (and help them to remember that practice happens more than just in the lesson!). For beginner piano students I generally work out the Faber Piano Adventures and for adults I use The Older Beginner Piano Course by Bastien. For Flute students I use the Trevor Wye Beginners Book for the Flute. Clarinet I use the Rubank Method books. I will be the first to admit I don't have a set method for teaching. However that is because I choose different methods based on the student. Every child, adult, teenager, etc learns at a different pace, has a different educational preference and I adjust myself to meet the needs of the student. Some will learn better by ear, others will learn through a traditional study of notes.
