I usually see what level the student is on and we go from there. The age and interest of the students will also tell me which way to go in the lesson. Usually with beginner students the Hal Leonard book is a good place to start but I'm willing to start with any beginning book. If the students are just interested in one specific thing then we focus on that. Read More

This is where I think it is fun to be creative because we are all different. Everybody has a different method of interpretation and I feel like that is my job to figure out what works for you as an individual. For example I will simply ask you questions like what style of music are you listening to and songs you want to learn how to play. It is also my job to know the difficulty level and how to guide you in the right direction to keep things fun! Read More

Every person has different strengths, weaknesses, motivators, and goals. I like to keep all of these things in mind before I start designing a lesson plan for each person. I like to make sure that I am teaching both the ear to listen and the eye to read, so I make sure I can improve the development of both by providing effective sight=reading and aural exercises in every lesson. In order to succeed at the keyboard, a student's technique must be ahead of their literature. This is why I use a well-developed system of technical exercises that are easy to understand and implement that allows the student to quickly gain mastery of the instrument. These techniques were thoroughly developed and taught by my mentor, Dr. Jill Sprenger, and I have seen students of all types succeed with them. I also use a self-paced program of theory skills and ear-training exercises that complement the wide variety of literature that excites each student. Read More

I try to get to know each student a little in the introduction/first lesson. I ask about their music goals and where they would like to be in a few months to a year. We talk about their favorite styles of music and artists. I am so excited to see my students progress and learn a new chord, play a new song well, sing a more challenging song, increase their vocal range, and become excited about their new musical skills!
