I start off all beginning students by teaching them the fundamentals of singing. If students have taken lessons in the past, I work on reviewing fundamental concepts with them. When a student first begins lessons, I typically spend more time on helping to build the student's technique than on repertoire, and as the student progresses, I split the lesson more equally between the two components. I believe in motivating students by helping them learn the repertoire to which they are most attracted, though I do also give them repertoire of styles with which they may be less familiar in order to help them solidify their technique. Currently, I'm advancing my musical expertise in the Master's program at MSM. Within the school's supportive community, I've emerged as a valued soloist, contributing to works such as Bach's "Magnificat," Mozart's "Missa Brevis in F - Benedictus," and the chorus of Verdi's "La Traviata." For small children, I used kid-friendly method books provided by the music school I was working with at the time to keep them engaged and entertained. For older children and adults, I simply ask about their prior musical knowledge and the music that they enjoy so we could use that as inspiration.
