I have taught for many music schools (both public and private).  I have also owned my owe school of arts, teaching all instruments, putting together young groups.  One group in particular called: "ARCTIC THUNDER" was a group of 14 children from 8 - 14 yrs old.  They performed at Walt Disney (Magic Music Days), and opened for many known recording artist.  You can see a video of them recording by searching for Kayla Arctic Thunder on Youtube. As a result its really important for me to tailor my lessons towards each student and what they would like to work on. For some that could mean working on vocal technique, others working on music and repertoire. For beginner that are children ... I use "Excellence in Theory" by Ryan Nowlin Bruce Pearson ... to cover music theory and ear training. After completion of this work I move the student to Bela Bartok's MikroCosmos Volume 1 or other available method books. I also come up with materials of my own from time to time ... each student is different ... so I take the approach of learning the student as I work with them ... with the idea that I will tailor the education to work best for the student! Learning to play an instrument is an endeavor that does not always yield immediate results. I like to encourage my students to look back on all they have accomplished and to set goals so that they are motivated to keep moving forward. Positive reinforcement and figuring out what gets the student excited are keys to their success.
