My name is Lauren and I am a voice and piano instructor who has the goal of not only improving your voice or piano skill, but also improving your confidence and presence on stage. My love of music dates back to my early childhood and it has been a dream come true getting to share it with budding musicians both young and old. For most of my beginning piano students, I use the piano adventures series. They offer a clear and well paced curriculum with numerous supplemental resources in a variety of styles. For beginning music theory, I use the Berklee School of Music texts or the Benward and Saker textbooks as well as many videos and other resources to explore musical concepts. For singing, I use a variety of sight singing books, all depending on the age and experience of the student. Read More

Instruments: Piano Voice

I am honest with a student about their body, I think the best way to sing is to know how all the pieces of your instrument work together to create healthy sound. I encourage my students to eat well and take care of themselves physically and emotionally. I also want my students to have fun by singing music that enspires them to be sincere with their emotions, singing for an audience can be scary but in a private lesson I encourage trying things out even if they seem silly. Having been a performer for many years, I realized at one point that my experience and skills could be of use to people who themselves were interested in developing their own passion for music... And so, shortly after my graduate studies, I began teaching ...There is nothing as exciting or rewarding as focusing one's personal passion and using that energy to awaken in another person their own passion for the interest which you share... Instruments: Piano Guitar Voice Keyboard Acoustic Guitar

My teaching experience is primarily with private voice and piano lessons. I began teaching as a private instructor in 2010, and have taught privately since. I've had the pleasure of working with a diverse age group from Pre-k to Seniors, and from Beginners to Advanced. I teach fundamentals and technique, but my primary focus in teaching is to inspire the student to explore their instrument, and what it's capable of. I am much more inclined toward cultivating Artists than I am in cultivating immaculate performers. Read More

Opera Voice Types

...types are known for the ability to express a more dramatic range of emotions and climaxes without straining the voice. Listen to an aria by the character Don Jose from Carmen to get the idea.   Dramatic tenors have a striking vocal presence–they can sing strong and intense (and often heroic) lines over an orchestra without risk of vocal injury. The range is slightly lower than that of a lyric tenor, and many dramatic tenors prefer not to sing the much-feared High C in performances. Florestan from Beethoven’s Fidelio is a classic dramatic tenor role.   Heldentenors, often referred to as “heroic... Read More

The Saxophone in Pop Music: 1950s to Today

... Pop music of the 1980s has many associations: new wave, glam metal, hip hop, synth pop, etc. The 1980s were also the golden age for using the saxophone in pop music as a solo instrument. Many bands used the saxophone to add solos to their tracks. Having a saxophone solo was almost kind of a fad in the 1980s. Many one-hit wonders featured a saxophone solo. Effects such as reverb were added to saxophone solos post-production. In addition, popular bands and artists such as Kool and the Gang and Michael Jackson featured horn sections. With both synthesizers as well as ... Read More

Across the Universe Chords for Guitar

...a challenging intro, the rest of the Across The Universe chords are relatively easy to play on guitar. The song opens up to a verse with a very simple strumming pattern. The verse chords are D-Bm-F#m-Em7-A-A7 for the first half, and then D-Bm-F#m-Em7-Gm for the second half. The second verse is two rounds of D-Bm-F#m-Em7-A-A7, and does not end on Gm. The third verse, which some people think of as a bridge, is D-Bm-F#m-Em7-Gm and then D-Bm-F#m-Em7-A-A7. Choruses and Ending   The gorgeous choruses of this song are even easier to play than the verses. The chorus chords are D-A7sus4-A7-G played twice. The song ends with a sprawling D chord played over the “Jai Guru Deva” vocals.   For more detailed instructions on how to play the Across The Universe chords, check out my instructional video.     ... History of the Flute: Antiquity to the Middle Ages

...sizes in their compositions. Martin Agricola’s Musica instrumentalis deudsch is one of the earliest examples, published in 1529.   The transverse flutes made during this period are really the precursors to the modern flutes of today. The makers of these flutes slowly adapted the finger holes to be more evenly spaced, and though they did not yet have keys, Marin Marsenne drew up a sketch of what these keys might look like and explained their importance to expanding the chromatic abilities of the flute.   History of the Flute Continues Who knows what inspired the creation of the flute? Maybe someone heard ... Read More

Flute Embouchure: Developing Your Best Sound

...down by half notes until you’ve reached as low as you can play. Then return to the note you started on and work your way upward instead, stopping on each new note for as long as needed to find a clear, focused tone.   Working on Intervals When the formation of your embouchure starts to become second nature while moving up and down the scale, you’ll want to start increasing the interval, or distance between the notes, as you practice. Focus on making the transition from one note to another as smooth as possible. Though your embouchure will change slightly, especially ... Read More
