For kids I find that having a large quantity of music to learn at each level gives more variety and sense of achievement, so I usually recommend beginning students have multiple books to aid in learning. For example a young piano student will study from lesson, theory, performance, and technique books each week. This yields a well-rounded student who is proud of their achievements and eager to move forward. For adults I recommend a lesson/theory combination book at least to help with reading music. Daniel Reyes Llinás, a Colombian composer, guitarist, and producer, derives inspiration from rhythmic and melodic angularity. He weaves atonal architectures with vibrant lyricism into his music. As a leader, Daniel has released two albums: "Molino," a captivating collage of world and new music, and "En Remolinos," a bold exploration that blurs the boundaries between improvisation and composition. His contributions can be heard on Parias Ensemble's experimental "St. Mark's sessions" and on the eclectic collaborative EP "re:SET vol:1”. Read More

I've been teaching on and off for about 10 years, I enjoy helping students obtain their goals, whatever their age or skill level. I think it's important for guitarists to learn some basic music fundementals we can communicate with other improvisers outside of guitar-centric music. I am not against guitar tablature sites altogether, but I do believe that tablature can be more useful if it at least indicates the rhythms. I believe learning how to read and notate rhythms can help enrich and empower students and help them develop as performs, composers and teachers in their own right. Read More

I feel that if a student is just banging away at notes without getting the big picture of how everything works it can be frustrating and fruitless. I like to teach as we play a song. I think you are able to benefit by using the theory and techniques as the song progresses. I can teach out of a book if the student/parent would prefer. I do customize songs to the age and interests of the student. Read More

Ukulele: Ukulele is a perfect instrument for children who are eager to explore the world of music but might not be ready for a larger instrument, or for those who love the unique sound it creates. The ukulele has recently become quite popular and is featured in many styles of new music. Students will use Hal Leonard method book as well as other music supplied by the instructor. The "Uke" helps students learn coordination, rhythm, and melody- all while having fun and learning songs. Read More

I have taught in one-on-one lessons, large group rehearsals, and everywhere in between. I started my teaching with a group of peers and professors while studying my undergraduate Music Education degree. We worked as a group to teach children ages six through 16 how to play violin/cello and perform as group. We then held a large concert as well as performed with the Sacramento Philharmonic at a Link Up concert. Read More

I've been playing music since the age of 4, first studying violin and then playing in a symphony orchestra at the age of 12 (Peter Meremblum-Hollywood Calif.) as well as doing TV work on violin. At the age of 15 I began playing guitar, and then worked my way through college playing gigs, traveled Europe with my own band, and joined the Beach Boys as a bassist and guitarist. I traveled the world, performing and recording with them for over 20 years as well as doing session work in L.A. and performing with local artists. Read More

Writing Guitar Riffs

...  How you write your riff will depend on your unique musical situation. Are you working on writing material with a live band? Then you’ll need the musicians you work with to play certain sections of music over and over again while you put your musical intuition, creativity, and knowledge of scale and mode shapes into practice. If you’re writing alone, it’s a good idea to write guitar lines over simple chord structures. You can use songwriting software like Garage Band to record yourself playing chords, or to generate synthesized chord progressions.   Whatever your situation is, great writing occurs when someone gives themselves... The Songwriting Process: Finding Your Voice

...where the real work begins.   Whether you begin your songwriting process with lyrics in mind or not, you’ll need to sit down with your instrument to come up with chord progressions. This won’t really be possible if you play an instrument like the saxophone or clarinet, so we recommend getting familiar with instruments like the piano or guitar. By “familiar,” we mean that you should know how to play basic chords on these instruments. If you don’t have access to a piano or guitar, consider using songwriting software on your computer. Apple computers now come stocked with a program called Garage Band, and ... Read More

Types of Clarinets

...sound and, therefore, its own applications. The clarinet is traditionally used in classical music: orchestras, symphonic and concert bands, marching bands, chamber ensembles, etc. It is used as both an ensemble and solo instrument. Because it has a history that extends back to the 1700s, the clarinet is used in traditional as well as contemporary classical repertoire. The clarinet was a very popular instrument in jazz from the 1910s to the 1940s. It was used in New Orleans music, but became extremely popular during the big band era. Names such as Benny Goodman and Woody Herman are still household names. Duke Ellington used ... Read More

Vocal Exercises for Singers: Breathing and Beginner Exercises

...tends to fall back into the throat—by using the “Nng” hum to help bring the voice forward, the singer will have a much easier time transitioning into the middle and higher registers.   Hum to Vowel Transitions Using either of these two hums, try singing a descending 5-step scale somewhere in the middle or lower part of your vocal range (in Solfège, this scale would be Sol – Fa – Mi – Re – Do).   Ex: G4 – F4 – E4 – D4 – C4 Once the exercise feels comfortable, try sliding open from the hum to an ... How To Find The Motivation To Practice

...starting to feel burned out? Then challenge yourself by creating a goal that has to do with learning a new piece of music in a completely different style than you’re used to. You’ll never get to the point in music where you’ll say, “I’m good; I know everything now.” There’s always something new to learn and hear, and that’s sort of a comforting thought when you think about it. Whether you’re completely new to music or you’ve been playing for a lifetime, doing your best to stay actively curious about music and all its possibilities will help you find the motivation to practice.   ...
