For kids I find that having a large quantity of music to learn at each level gives more variety and sense of achievement, so I usually recommend beginning students have multiple books to aid in learning. For example a young piano student will study from lesson, theory, performance, and technique books each week. This yields a well-rounded student who is proud of their achievements and eager to move forward. For adults I recommend a lesson/theory combination book at least to help with reading music. I will always prefer to have hour-long lessons with my students. I feel this length of time gives both the student and the teacher the best chance of having a successful lesson each time they meet. Some may say its a high bar to meet for every lesson, every week, but I accept nothing less from myself and hold high expectations for my students in the hopes they meet them. Read More

I began my teaching career about 7 years ago, during my senior year of high school. I have taught lessons for both piano and guitar consistently since that time, including my time as the Piano Instructor at Cadenza Academy in Portland, OR. I like to let the students navigate the material they learn, as I feel that they should have complete control of what they are focusing their money and time on. Read More

I am a dedicated musician and teacher beginning my fifth year in Portland. My background is multi-disciplinary: on top of my musical coursework I hold degrees in poetry and language. I am a songwriter as well as an instrumentalist and composer. I believe creativity and originality are very valuable parts of musical expression that sometimes get overlooked! I have more than three years experience playing in local bands, and I am well-versed in the Portland music scene (though I continue to add to my knowledge!) Read More

I began teaching after graduating high school and have continued to do so ever since. During these years I attended college at California State University Chico, where I earned my Bachelor's degree as an audio engineer. This journey greatly helped me grow as a musician, teacher, leader, and engineer. Through out my college years I continued to play in bands both through my school and locally in our community, started my own business to help local musicians gain recognition and improve their skills, gained a new appreciation for musicianship and creativity through the eyes of an audio engineer, and of course taught my students to improve their musical abilities. I am a passionate and driven teacher whose focus is always on my students' musical goals and development. I focus on roots American styles: the blues, early rock, bluegrass, country, folk, and jazz. I graduated with a degree in Guitar Performance from Lewis Clark College, where I studied performance under renowned Portlandguitarist Dan Balmer and music theory under Portland pianist Susan Smith. Authentic and time-honored musical styles are my emphasis and serve as the foundations upon which my performances and lessons are based. Read More

Writing Guitar Riffs

...  How you write your riff will depend on your unique musical situation. Are you working on writing material with a live band? Then you’ll need the musicians you work with to play certain sections of music over and over again while you put your musical intuition, creativity, and knowledge of scale and mode shapes into practice. If you’re writing alone, it’s a good idea to write guitar lines over simple chord structures. You can use songwriting software like Garage Band to record yourself playing chords, or to generate synthesized chord progressions.   Whatever your situation is, great writing occurs when someone gives themselves... The Songwriting Process: Finding Your Voice

...where the real work begins.   Whether you begin your songwriting process with lyrics in mind or not, you’ll need to sit down with your instrument to come up with chord progressions. This won’t really be possible if you play an instrument like the saxophone or clarinet, so we recommend getting familiar with instruments like the piano or guitar. By “familiar,” we mean that you should know how to play basic chords on these instruments. If you don’t have access to a piano or guitar, consider using songwriting software on your computer. Apple computers now come stocked with a program called Garage Band, and ... Read More

Types of Clarinets

...sound and, therefore, its own applications. The clarinet is traditionally used in classical music: orchestras, symphonic and concert bands, marching bands, chamber ensembles, etc. It is used as both an ensemble and solo instrument. Because it has a history that extends back to the 1700s, the clarinet is used in traditional as well as contemporary classical repertoire. The clarinet was a very popular instrument in jazz from the 1910s to the 1940s. It was used in New Orleans music, but became extremely popular during the big band era. Names such as Benny Goodman and Woody Herman are still household names. Duke Ellington used ... Read More

How To Find The Motivation To Practice

...starting to feel burned out? Then challenge yourself by creating a goal that has to do with learning a new piece of music in a completely different style than you’re used to. You’ll never get to the point in music where you’ll say, “I’m good; I know everything now.” There’s always something new to learn and hear, and that’s sort of a comforting thought when you think about it. Whether you’re completely new to music or you’ve been playing for a lifetime, doing your best to stay actively curious about music and all its possibilities will help you find the motivation to practice.   ...
