For brass instrumental students, I generally use the Rubank Method books, focusing on care of the instrument and basic fundamentals. For piano students I use a variety of different method books and am not tied down to any one series. We will also work on scales and the Hannon series For vocal students, I use a series of vocalises, scales and other exercises to strengthen the voice. At that point, I introduce the chord method as well as the number system- having them play certain progressions as I prompt them to play. It is inspiring to share the desire for good vocalism with such a diversity of people. My professional singing career continues as well. I enjoy a varied performing repertoire, singing many recitals and much contemporary music, but also Mozart and nineteenth-century French and Italian opera.
