I began teaching music in high school, a friend coworker had a son that wanted to learn trumpet and it was a fun way to make money. As I continued into college, I learned that I was able to give lessons to members of the band or choir as an employee to the Adrian College Academic Services Department and I was happy to do so. I teach beginning students both by rote and through reading. We use standard Suzuki books for repertoire and method books such as Wohlfahrt, Mazaz, and Sevcik. Very young students begin on Sassmanshaus since it is very engaging as well as well written. However if there is a specific book a student wants to learn from (such as a book from school or a specific style such as country or fiddle) then I am more than willing to teach from that. Read More

With beginners, you want them to learn the notes first, then the chords, the harder chords..etc. With intermediate players, you can begin teaching them songs and giving them songs to work on. My favorite moments while teaching is the light bulb moments, for these to occure lessons are goal based and created around the students level of exsperiece, future goals, and personal goals. In the first lesson we set mini goals for each lesson, medium goals for the month, and large goals for something we want to work towards or a up and coming competition. I use a positive environment to help student feel good about their accomplishments, but also have them discover areas of improvement by recording them or asking them what they feel they did well and what they feel they need to work on.
