One of the things I love most is the shock of parents and students who expect that either they themselves are going to dread the lessons or practice session or that their child will give up and hate practicing. Parents and students tell me how exciting they are to come each week and hit each milestone. I make learning fun! Simple as that. I have had so many students over the years who are so nervous and timid about playing or singing and by the time we get to the first recital, they are confident and light up on the stage. Read More

When beginning teaching I typically assess the learners general attention span, natural strengths, and what is motivating for them. I complete a beginner piano assessment to find out how the learner is with pattern recognition, any previous knowledge they may have, and what type of instruction they respond best to. When I understand the learners least restrictive environment I will choose the type of notation we start with. This can be traditional sheet music, pop chords, or adapted notation that may consist of numbers, letters, and/or colors. Read More

At the beginng of the first lesson I like to ask my student about their musical experience, interest and if they have any over arching goals, and after that I warm them up and teach them part of a simple song either from a popular musical or (for my younger students) Disney song in order to hear the maturity, tonality, and range they are starting with. If my students do not have a particular song or songs picked out then I assign songs, trying to adhere to the student's interest, during the second lesson. Read More

While gaining my Bachelor's degree in Music for Vocal Music Education, I gained experience teaching private lessons, musical theatre coaching, as well as large group music classes with students ranging from Kindergarten to College. With this range of students, I've found a great balance of having fun with learning great work ethic and professionalism. Students will grow as singers and performers through consistent lessons and daily individual practice working on everything from singing basics and vocal health to stage presence and interpretation. With beginners (children and adults alike) I like to start with the Faber and Faber Piano Adventures method books. I tailor each student's learning experience, creating an individual path to success. I stress the fundamentals of music (learning to read music, proper physical technique, etc.) in an engaging and fun manner. Read More

I teach through positive reinforcement and encouragement with a set structure that allows for discipline and certain benchmarks that can determine success and mastery of certain skills. I truly believe that when students are nurtured and given a comfortable space they will excel as creating music and art is vulnerable and requires the student to let go. This cannot happen unless the teacher facilitates an environment and space for organic innovation by the student. Read More

My lessons focus on trouble areas identified during the initial lesson. I would develop a plan of attack setting realistic goals that are both measureable, realistic and obtainable to achieve. A usual model lesson would consist of the following segments: 1. Intonation - I would spend about 5-10 minutes in this area training the student to properly find the center of pitch and listen for an adaptive center of pitch. Most flautists aren't playing in a symphony and will be exposed to an ever changing center of pitch. 2. Read More
