I always begin by figuring out how I can best teach a student by asking them their interests and goals for singing; whether they want to sing jazz or provide vocals for their rock band, or learn to sing classically, etc. For all students who are atleast in their teens or older, I begin by describing how singing works and talk about the function of the body in singing. I usually use pictures from anatomy books to help point out the key organs and muscle groups that are engaged in healthy singing, so as to give a visual aid of what we are working to condition for singing. I am a driven and passionate educator with a background in youth arts mentorship for voice, piano, and dance. I position my work as an arts professional to motivate students through pursuit of excellence, to transfer practical skills, and to achieve lasting impact. I graduated from New York University in 2020 with a BA in Music, and a minor in French Language Studies. I have had the opportunity to provide musical and artistic direction for groups and soloists at the high school and college level, with the Anaheim Union High School District and NYU. Read More

I aim to create a safe and open space for students to try, make mistakes, and make progress in a supportive environment. We laugh, we consider, and we seriously make beautiful music happen, often very quickly. I like to carve each lesson for what my students need, and it has a fun, experimental element: special technical exercises for your voice, listening and repeating work-outs for breath and pitch, and even more specifics for your goals. Instruments: Piano Voice Trumpet Euphonium

I always like to get a feel for the students ability first and then choose the right level to begin with them. I always start with some exercise work to strengthen the basics and then include a lot of fun pieces to boost the fun and satisfaction with the improvement. I am very effective at improving a players ability and enjoyment of the instrument. Read More

Each person is unique. I like to start my lessons by getting to know my students through assessing where their passion(s) lie. I know that each student progresses at their own pace. I help them set realistic goals through the development of lessons that serve as a measurement for growth. I believe in giving positive reinforcement to my students because as fun as playing the music is, I find that it can be a tough process when trying to learn. Read More

If students come in with just an initial curiosity or are unsure about their direction, we try various songs and learning methods to see what they feel most comfortable with, what's most fun for them. I also love to ask the student questions and emphasize open communication to make sure they're an active participant in the learning process. This includes weekly lesson notes and consistent communication with any loved ones. Read More

How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
If the child can follow directions and remain focused for 15" segments, as well as discern between different types of vowel sounds, he/she is ready to start. The specific vocal parts (i.e. soprano/alto/tenor/bass) are not applicable to prepubescent children. It's only after puberty that a child's voice is no longer categorized as boy or girl.

When will I start to see results?
The teacher, hopefully, will be able to detect changes first. However, students will be able to hear volume and vowel control as well as the ability to sing higher and lower, just by doing it well!

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
When I was in Jr. High, the music teacher took time from her lunch breaks, weekly to get me started with voice lessons. Also freshman year of high school, I was informed by a teacher that I needed to go to college, thus changed my business courses to college courses. Teachers always represented something special to me. They were kind, knowledgeable and insightful. I tried to become those things myself. Hopefully, I've accomplished some of those. My Jr. High music teacher's piano playing was lovely and her attitude was positive.

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
It was apparent that singing was my forte. Back to Captain Kangaroo, I knew that I could easily mimic the "classical singer's" voice. I remember thinking "Something must be wrong; I'm just a kid." Later, I performed in my first large talent show with my dad playing guitar and my little sister singing backup. Then, in High School, when my class opted to do a Senior Play, rather than the usual Musical, in which I was expected to sing a leading role, a concert was given so that I might sing my 1st major solo. It was "Without a Song." (Still have the newspaper review)!

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
The teacher should guide the student with exactly what to practice, how to do that, and why. Psychologists these days believe that one cannot attain mastery of a skill (dance, playing an instrument or singing) in less than 10,000 hours - so that's what we go for. I have mapped out how long it would take to attain a similar stature. (Of course, if someone has been listening to music and singing since childhood, such attainment is already on its way!) Beginners are cool - but they need to be mindful that all skills take time and work to develop. Hopefully developing their vocal skill is one they find worthwhile.

...and he even held the post of Editor for Musical America for two years.   The pivotal moment of Taylor’s career, however, came while he was performing radio commentary during intermission of a New York Philharmonic concert; Walt Disney, then mulling over whom to cast as the “host” character in his yet-to-come Fantasia, heard one of the broadcasts. He was sold on Deems Taylor.   Within a few days of a phone call on September 3, 1938, Deems Taylor had traveled by rail to Hollywood, where he began to enthusiastically compile a program for Disney’s new motion picture.   The Finished Product After extensive ... Easy Guitar Chords and How to Play Them

...When you’re just starting out and learning the fundamentals of playing the guitar and some easy guitar chords, it is both an exciting and frustrating experience. Many of the songs that you want to learn may seem like they’re out of your skill level. And if you want to play with other musicians or start a band, it might not feel like you have the versatility to keep up with other musicians. Often, when guitarists first start out playing, they find themselves restricted to playing simple riffs of just a couple notes. It can take time for your fingers to build the strength, dexterity, and resilience ... Read More

Viola Maintenance: Keeping Your Instrument Sounding Its Best

...dust from your viola, as the accumulation can also deteriorate the varnish. Keep a cleaning cloth in your case and remember to dust off your instrument after each time you play.   Strings   Sooner or later, your viola’s strings will need to be replaced. Strings should be replaced about once a year for beginning students and every 4-6 months for advanced and pre-professional students. In addition to producing a dull sound, old strings also have the tendency of going false, or in other words, they lack a clear tonal center that makes it difficult to play in tune. Also, if you notice that a string is ... Read More
