My teaching philosophy is "exploration as a road to mastery." I help students build a repertoire they can perform. This tends to be a combination of songs they know and love, and songs that I introduce them to. I introduce the elements of music theory in relation to songs. Scales, harmony, and ear training are grasped better, and enjoyed more, once a student has context. My goal is to have each student feel safe in the learning process, while still pushing them out of their comfort zone. Read More

Although I may be fairly new to formal teaching, my experience working in groups and sessions has taught me an incredible amount about humility and teamwork. I believe in placing emphasis on being a well-rounded person and musician above prioritizing skill on whatever instrument my students intend to learn. Being humble only increases your chances of success, especially if your talent is backed by humility and understanding. After all, there are no business or work relationships, only relationships. For beginner students, we start off using the beginning books from "Piano Adventures" by Faber Faber, and published by Hal Leonard. They learn to read music, improvise, music theory, and play all style of music. A typical lesson for an elementary school student would be 10 min of playing assigned pieces that they've practiced for the week, 10 min of new songs for the next week, 5 min of music theory, and 5 min of some sort of musical game. Music is fun, no matter how tedious the learning process may be. With practice and determination, a student will be able to progress and love their instrument even more. Each week we will determine realistic goals for the student. If progress is made, I may come up with something creative ways to reward my students for their work. As long as I inspire and touch the lives of my students, I will feel rewarded as well. Read More

I will pass on the warmup methods that I was trained to do from my professors at Berklee and Manhattan School of Music. We will also go over the difference between practicing and jamming and how to do both in between lessons for I believe they are both important for vocal development for different reasons. I will keep an astute eye and ear on elements such as breath management, intonation, tone quality, phrasing, diction, expression, interpretation, stage presence, preparation, musicianship, and last but not least, attitude. Instruments: Voice

My method of coaching focuses on three main areas: diaphragmatic breathing, vocal fold alignment, and proper laryngeal positioning. These three areas have a direct impact on tone quality, placement and ease of transition from chest voice to mix voice. The first few lessons with a new student always begins with good diaphragmatic breathing exercises combined with edging techniques for fold alignment up to the first vocal bridge. Once the student feels comfortable in both of those areas, I then combine those areas with proper larynx positioning to seamlessly navigate their first vocal bridge! Read More
