My lessons for vocalists are divided into two sections: technique and repertoire. For singers, breath management skills are of primary importance as this directly affects intonation. Listening! I want to hear from the student why they're excited to play the instrument, in my case learn how to sing or play guitar. Every person and thus every student will be different. Some people find certain things easier or harder than others, so even if say I were teaching say two students of the same ability or progress level I wouldn't just give them excercises out of a book I'd customize the lessons so they could develop and build upon their currentskill level. For beginning piano students I use a combination of Piano Adventures curriculum and Suzuki piano method. I like using Piano Adventures because it is a seamless and easy way to learn how to sightread. Suzuki is used to enhance performance skills and learn traditional repertoire. I supplement with other sheet music on the side and teach scales and technical work additionally. For beginning voice students the majority of initial lessons are spent on technique and students are encouraged to apply it in whatever repertoire they enjoy with occasional assigned peices. For my voice students I prefer to work within genres that the student likes; I did not like being forced to sing certain songs when I was studying voice, so I would not want to do that to anyone else! My flute students I like to work with the Rubank method books - from beginner to advanced; they offer the most comprehensive approach to playing the flute. For young piano students I'm a fan of John Thompson method books. I get the student through beginners and then through at least the Grade 1 book. Then I introduce beginner piano literature books to help the student see a real music book. I work on music theory and how to map out a piece of music to learn it better. We start talking about musical style as well. For adults I use basically the same method but usually start with the Alfred all-in-one book. Read More

I have been consistently teaching private music lessons for the past 18 years. I began my own music education with piano and was always very active with choral singing during my younger years. I began studying voice in college, and found the piano background was an invaluable asset!
