For beginning students, we start with simple scales, fingering patterns, short melodies, and based on that student’s needs and learning style, I decide which lesson plan to use (Suzuki, Hal Leonard, etc.). I use Tonal Harmony textbook excerpts to help with advanced theory lessons. More advanced singers receive more training in classical and musical theater technique. My philosophy is that every singer should be trained classically first. I am interested in the individual growth of my students. I encourage exploration and learning through experiences, and if my students leave my classes with a little more knowledge and a great deal more wonder, I consider it a success. I like to follow my students down the tracks they are interested in and then choose to broaden the path once we are there. From this place I have written a 12 page chart featuring a Justin Bieber tune, written a Britney Spears song into Swing, put a Miranda Lambert song in five, and arranged an original by The Script in a Latin feel. I try to make the learning fun and interesting for my students. My goal is to have them look forward to their next lesson and make learning their instrument something they value. I believe every student progresses at their own pace. I make sure the lesson is at a level they can handle, but challenging enough to give them a sense of accomplishment when they achieve success. The relationship between student and teacher is foundational for growth. I take time to get to know every student as an individual to help them feel supported and comfortable in lessons. I encourage each student to set realistic goals and work at their own pace. We will work on a piece until it is performance ready, meaning it is note perfect, memorized, and blocked.
